Not all beaches are dog friendly - in fact some ban them altogether, and across the country bans are on the up. Caroline Kisko, Kennel Club Secretary, says: “An increasing number of local authorities are extending the current beach bans, in our opinion, unnecessarily”.
So if you're looking to take your pet on holiday this summer, check out our guide to the country's most canine-friendly beaches, before packing Fido off to the coast.
1. Rhossili Bay, Swansea
Let’s start with a real classic. This spectacular sandy beach offers miles of pristine sand at the tip of the Gower Peninsula in west Wales. There’s enough space for dogs to run free and there’s usually a good selection of kites to bark at. The beach even has its own shipwreck – the remains of the Helvetta, wrecked in 1887.
Directions: Follow the A4118, South Gower Road, then take the B4247 to Rhossili.
2. Danes Dyke, Yorkshire
Over on the east coast, dogs should follow their noses to Danes Dyke beach, a small dog-friendly beach, located between Bridlington and Flamborough Head in an area which was designated as a Local Nature Reserve in 2002. It is a mixture of sand and pebbles and has the feel of a well hidden beach. The beach is reached by taking a pleasant five-minute stroll along a nature trail through woodland.
Directions: Follow signs for Danes Dyke. One mile to the west of Flamborough village on the B1255 from Bridlington.
3. Holkham, Norfolk
Everybody loves the wide open spaces of Holkham beach. At low tide the sand stretches to the horizon and that’s likely to be where you’re dog will be heading as soon as they’re off the lead – and if this beach is good enough for Gwyneth P (where she filmed scenes for Shakespeare in Love) it’s good enough for your beloved dog.
Directions: Access to the pay car park is directly from the A149 coastal road to the west of Wells-next-the-Sea.
4. Durdle Door, Dorset

It must be a great fun to run wildly with your lovely dog ! No worries, no concerns, just with happines ! With the leadership of the dog's lightning speed, you will throw away all the emtions!
Stephanie , Suzhou , China
Don't forget Perrenporth in Cornwall, easy parking, dog waste bins, miles of beautiful beach.
Dave Duffield, Manchester, UK
You missed Caithness - Castletown, Reiss and Strathey for a start. A long long expanse of white sand, sea and fresh air with few people about - sometimes it's sunny with clear blue skies; sometimes grey, cold and windy; sometimes you can't see 50 yards in any direction for the Haar.
Michael, Berkhamsted,
Jersey does not ban dogs on its beaches: during May to September they have to be kept on leads from 10:30 to 18:00.
Whether you are a dog lover or a dog hater or indifferent to dogs, everyone can enjoy our beautiful beaches!
Sue , Jersey, Channel Islands
Some dog owners spoil it for those of us that are good owners, keep our dogs under control and pick up after them!! These people who take kids on the beach can be just as bad, dumping dirty nappies and their picnic rubbish all over!!
Clare, Boston, Lincs
A point of law is that all land between low and high tides actually belongs to the crown and local authorities have no right in any way to impose restrictions on them. Come on dog owners stand up and fight for your rights!
Bails, Yatton, England
I think humans spoil beaches more than dogs ever could!
Ryan, Leeds, West yorks
it makes me laugh the good/ bad dog chitter chatter. The negative comments are from people who probably live a fairly sterile existence or have a preference to cats who terrorise local wildlife and use other peoples gardens as a toilet!
Plenty of people out there who are more unpleasant than dogs
Lisa, Lichfield,
Many have bad experiences with dogs due to their irresponsible owners. I was bitten by a dog off the leash and now nervous of certain breeds. A quiet sit on a popular beach was ruined when a huge (loose) rottweiler suddenly appeared face to face with me. I was petrified. Very inconsiderate owner.
Jean Burton, Norwich, Norfolk
My favourite dog beaches are Mawgan Porth in Cornwall and Old Hunstanton in Norfolk. We always keep our dog on a lead unless there is absolutely no one about and we go armed with poo bags!
If dogs get a bad name for messes it is all down to iresponsible owners
chrispearce, Northants, UK
There should be dog only beaches as far as I'm concerned away from the moaning minnie anti dog brigade, for those who don't like dogs we don't like you ! | theres nothing better than watching your dog having a blast on the beach, well done to the authorities who allow it ! Thanks for helpful guide
b coles, carmarthenshire, wales
Good to those that will avoid dogs on the beach. We don't want you there anyway as you probably complain about everything anyway.
Neil, Jupiter,
My 2 year old niece (with 3 accompanying grown ups) was knocked down and trodden on by 2 large out of control golden retrievers on 2 days on a beach last week. The owner was nowhere to be seen. I'm looking for dogfree beaches. "Blue flag" beaches supposedly should not have dogs on them. MK
margaret keirnen, argyll,
For those in Scotland, there are many beautiful beaches to choose from. For example the beach between Gullane and North Berwick, miles of sand and rocky alcoves. And Barra on the Outer Hebrides. The beach facing West on the other side of the airport landing strip, 2 miles of pure, white sand.
Chris Barrow, Edinburgh, UK
And Frinton On Sea in Suffolk of course!!!
(And to the anti-dog brigade... if more kids had dogs today, we'd have a far happier and less violent society. So may the doings of a thousand dogs squelch into your toes... )
Ian, London, UK
Come to this most beautiful part of the world, the Pacific Paradise and bring your dog to enjoy Doggie Beach in Ambelside and the freedom in Lighthouse Park, or just come and enjoy other peoples podles.
Harriet Green, West Vancouver, BC, Canada
Dont forget Druridge Bay in Northumberland. Its one of the best beaches for dogs around here, a looooong crescent of lovely sand, backed by the dog friendly Druridge Nature Park to dry off in and get a cuppa and scone.
GLL, Widdrington,
In fairness to those who wish to avoid dogs could you list 10 beaches where I could walk without fear. The I of W and Jersey
can count as two but I would have to take a ferry trip so eight more please.
Teresa M, Bracknell, Berkshire
What would I do without such valuable info...
Jaap, Volendam, Netherlands
Thank you for the list,we now know which to avoid
robert bryan, poole, uk
How could you miss the Sand Dunes at Merthyr Mawr leading on to Ogmore beach?
