If you bargain, you may be surprised at how much you can get off. Here is a selection of my favourite city hotels, some chic, some traditional.

1 THE GORING
London

Run for four generations by the Goring family, this 71-room hotel near Victoria is loved for its traditional values and personal service. Excellent meals (no Muzak, no mobiles) are served in its restaurant, which was recently redesigned by David Linley.

The hotel has air conditioning, a garage and a private garden. Some bedrooms have a balcony.

2 ONE ALDWYCH
London

Gordon Campbell Gray's impressive conversion of the Edwardian offices of The Morning Post offers muted tones, white pillars and a giant statue of an oarsman in the double-height lobby, complemented by trendy flower arrangements and a large collection of contemporary art.

The stylish bedrooms, all with triple glazing, have the latest technology and elegant granite bathrooms. Service is impeccable and good meals are on offer in the two restaurants.

3 42 THE CALLS
Leeds

One of the first design hotels, this conversion of an old mill on the River Aire, in the city centre, retains its flair for style and decor. It has hundreds of original paintings and drawings, bold fabrics and smart public rooms.

Bedrooms have business facilities, including WiFi, and “supremely comfortable” beds. Good meals are served at Brasserie 44.
