Two surveys out this week show that many travellers are not alone when they hit the sack on their business trips. The findings will not be a surprise to many business travellers, familiar with the boredom of life on the road, nor to stay-at-home other halves suspicious at their partners’ sudden willingness to be on the road all the time.
The first survey, from the organisers of the Business Travel Show, asked 500 regular business travellers about their nocturnal habits. It found that 37% of respondents admitted to regularly cheating on their partners. Some 8% also admitted to having joined the “mile high club”, again not with their partners.
Those travellers who do not take a new partner to bed possibly have other thoughts on their minds. Another study, this time by hotel chain Crowne Plaza, found that 62% of business travellers have taken their BlackBerry to bed in case an important work email comes through during the night, while a quarter admitted to sleeping with their BlackBerry every night.
This inability to switch off at the end of the night has prompted Crowne Plaza to start telling business travellers when it is time to go to bed. The hotel chain has come up with the concept of the "switch off call", mirroring the traditional wake-up call, and is trialling it at a number of UK hotels.
Paul Brackley, general manager, Crowne Plaza London the City, said: "Most of our guests are frequent business travellers who work long hours and find it impossible to switch off at the end of the day. When people travel on business they feel under pressure to work even longer hours than normal. The ‘switch off call’ is our way of telling guests enough is enough and suggesting it’s time they go to bed."
Guests will be asked at check-in whether they want a switch-off call and will be offered mint or ginger tea to relax them before they hit the sack. It will be interesting to see how many order a single cup and how many order two.
