Bedruthan Steps - best for children with adults in tow

As you draw up to the concrete monstrosity that is Bedruthan Steps, it's easy to think that you've picked the wrong place. But once inside, looking out at the dramatic coastal views, you will find one of the most child-friendly hotels.

It's easy to fill your days, with the beach a five-minute toddle away, an indoor soft-play area as well as an imaginative outdoor playground, a pool and evening entertainment for children. And don't forget the Ofsted-registered crèche if you want time alone in the spa.

One grumble: if you want to eat with your children rather than do baby listening, you have to wait until 7.30pm and endure a service that at best is plodding. Once you get it, though, the food is good, locally sourced and freshly prepared.

Watergate Bay - best for adults with children in tow

Family-friendly rather than family- focused best describes Watergate Bay ; just as many people without children as with them stay in the hotel. So while there are children's meals and entertainment every afternoon, don't be surprised to find that your room has ornaments in reach of tiny hands, curtains that don't block out the daylight and a baby-listening service that is in need of an upgrade.

But for the couple not wanting to compromise on life before children, this hotel on one of Cornwall's best beaches, with its relaxed atmosphere and trendy beach-hut styling in its 50 rooms, ticks all the boxes.

It's also just over the car park from Jamie Oliver's Fifteen, which has a buzzing atmosphere, amazing sea view and wonderful fresh Italian cuisine (the three-course lunch at £24.50 is great value). Try the Beach Hut for a more informal meal.

If you're after a family suite, go for No 4, which has a private decking area for no extra cost, or if you're on a budget, try the adjoining Coach House.
