What they say: “A good bar in the heart of everything.”

We say: from April to September the busiest bar in the pretty Lila Torg square in the centre of Malmö puts tables and chairs out on the cobbled streets. In spring that means a dense forest of outdoor heaters is constructed outside Mello Yello as well as the surrounding bars. The vision of scores of the heaters with brims touching somewhat belies Malmö‘s claim to be the “Green City" but do they combine to take the edge off the evening chill. Like most other bars in Malmö and Copenhagen each chair also comes complete with a slightly grotty blanket to keep your knees warm, so there’s no excuse not to enjoy the hubbub in the square. It prominent position ensures that the prices are high but they remain bearable. A glass of Staropramen is 57SEK (£4.40), Nachos with cheese (£5.70) and burgers are from £10.

What they say: “This Malmö restaurant came by recommendation of a Malmö local. Can't say enough positive things about this place.”

We say: an intimate and romantic but laid back tapas restaurant. The calamari, honey and chilli chicken, boquerones, tortillas and the rest were commendable but not exceptional tapas standards. The meal, however, was concluded wonderfully with the venue’s exquisite bonbon truffles (£42 for dinner for two).

What they say: “A split personality - with upstairs a nice and busy coffee bar and downstairs a cave-like retro lounge.”

We say: the two levels in this cool bar do have different atmospheres but both are humming with a trendy crowd of students and 20-somethings. The sofas, design-classic armchairs and open fire downstairs definitely allow it to qualify as “hygge” a quality beloved by the Danish which translates loosely as cosy, relaxed and fun.
