Hôtel des Trois Collèges
With small, plain and pleasing rooms, the Trois Colleges has a monastic charm appropriate to a building that once housed novices from the nearby Cluny monastery. Jonathan Wyplosz is the third generation of his family to run this 44-room hotel and has overseen some serious renovations, including new air-conditioning. Worth seeking out are the corner rooms, including 44 and 54 - they are bigger and look out on to the rooftops of the Sorbonne. Families and romantics should opt for the sixth-floor rooms, which are beamed and can hold an extra bed. Academic-minded people will appreciate the staff's advice on museums and exhibitions - they can arrange passes to the Musée d'Orsay to skip the queue.
Details: 16 rue Cujas, 5-ième; 00 33 1 43 54 67 30; www.3colleges.com. Doubles from 105 euros.
Hôtel du 7e Art
This charming hotel celebrates cinema with memorabilia in the 23 rooms, café-bar and corridors. The young owners are friendly and the location, on the edge of the Marais, is superb. It's not the most polished hotel - there is no lift and the wooden panelling in the rooms gives them a chalet feel - but there is a Serge Gainsbourg-style charm. The basement, in 13th-century vaults, houses a small gym and a laundry room.
Details: 20 rue Saint Paul, 4-ième; 00 33 1 44 54 85 00; www.paris-hotel-7art.com. Doubles from 85 euros.
Hôtel Lindbergh
A 26-room hotel with a sense of style, from the seagrass matting in the lounge to rooms with french windows and proper wardrobes. A few rooms have views of the Eiffel Tower. Newly renovated rooms come with plasma TVs and a soothing green decor.
Details: 5 rue Chomel 7-ième; 00 33 1 45 48 35 53, www.hotellindbergh. com. Doubles from 136 euros.
Hôtel Chopin
Housed in a 19th-century shopping arcade, with an old-fashioned glass frontage, at first glance it is the most visually appealing budget hotel in Paris. The bedrooms, however, are a good deal plainer, with battered carpets and tired bathrooms. In the middle of the theatre district, and handy for the fin de siècle restaurant Chartier, its position in the passage means that there is no street noise.
Details: 46 passage Jouffroy; 9-ième 00 33 1 47 70 58 10; www.hotel chopin.fr. Doubles from 88 euros.
Hôtel Amour
This is a hotel for consenting - and cool - adults, a former brothel in the saucy Pigalle district. None of its 20 rooms has anything as distracting as a television. Nor, with the cheaper rooms, will you have a separate bathroom. Instead, in rooms such as the beguiling 202, the bath is incorporated into the room. On the ground floor a great restaurant serves Gallic comfort food to hip Parisians.
Details: 00 33 1 48 78 31 80; 8 rue Navarin, 9-ième. Doubles from 130 euros.
Hôtel le Clément
For a budget hotel, le Clément exudes more than its share of chic, from the cool grey frontage to the hushed feel inside. Owned by the Charrade family, this 28-room hotel overlooks what was once the St-Germain market. The rooms are small, but tasteful, and the lobby, with books, sofa and plants, is especially appealing.
Details: 00 33 1 43 26 53 60; www.hotel-clement.fr; 6 rue Clément, 6-ième. Doubles from 130 euros.
Hôtel du Globe
Endearingly eccentric, meticulously restored and extravagantly furnished. No lift, but plenty of atmosphere, including a suit of armour in the hallway. The breakfast room is essentially a corridor; you would be better off heading to a café.
Details: 15 rue des Quatre-Vents, 6-ième; 00 33 1 43 26 35 50; www.hotel-du-globe.fr. Doubles from 110 euros.
Hôtel du Collège de France
This quintessentially Parisian, 29- room budget hotel is in a quiet, quasi-residential area of the Latin Quarter and has friendly managers. Since there is a lift, it is worth taking one of the rooms on the higher floors for the views and garret-style atmosphere. Aim for room 52. The room might be small, the beds twin and the bathroom a touch 1970s (beige tiling), but it's high enough to escape street noise.
Details: 7 rue Thénard, 5-ième; 00 33 1 43 26 78 36; www.hotel-collegedefrance.com. Doubles from 97 euros.
Hôtel Beaumarchais
With comically curved headboards and funky mosaic bathrooms, this 31-room property aims to bring the budget hotel up to date. In summer breakfast is served in a geranium-filled courtyard. The location offers easy access to the clubs and bars of the 11th arrondissement.
Details: 3 rue Oberkampf, 11-ième; 00 33 1 53 36 86 86; www.hotelbeaumarchais.com. Doubles from 110 euros.
Hôtel Saint André des Arts
Delightfully old-fashioned exterior and a no-fuss interior with 31 rooms - this hotel is further proof that the Latin Quarter is awash with cool little lodging places. It offers aged wooden staircases, beams and wonky floors, but can be noisy because of surrounding bars and restaurants.
Details: 66 rue Saint André des Arts, 6-ième; 00 33 1 43 26 96 16. Doubles from 93 euros.
