MUSEUM OF CYCLADIC ART

One of the most representative collections from the Cycladic period, the MCA is more compact and manageable than the National Museum. This nightspot is on the pedestrianised section of Haritos Street, where all the scenesters who can’t quite squeeze in through the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it bar entrance spill out on to the pavement to party. PERISCOPE HOTEL

This small boutique hotel, owned by local art don Dakis Joannou, has a contemporary vibe, with live cityscapes projected in the lobby from the rooftop periscope and giant murals on the outer walls welcoming you in. OIKEIO

In Kolonaki, Athens’ poshest corner of town, prices are normally sky high; that is unless you delve into this cosy bistro for the freshest, home-style cooking. As ever in this city, reserve a table, and enjoy the most delicious local breads, baked sardines, salads and traditional Greek fare without pretension (or tourists). 15 Ploytarhoy (00 30 210 725 9216).

DA CAPO

If you can find a space, this café is a prime people-watching spot. You might wonder if anyone works in this city, as there seem to be so many people lazing about over a frappé. These are expensive, setting you back €5, but you can nurse them for hours, making it fine recession spending. Tsakalof 1 (00 30 210 360 2497).

MASTIHA SHOP

Mastiha is an aromatic resin – sourced from a tree grown only in Chios – whose therapeutic properties have turned it into a modern-day wonder-balm. Encased in nostalgic Sixties packaging, with romanticised Mediterranean imagery, this shop’s flavoured potions, sweets and cosmetics are a treat for the senses. 6 Panepistimiou Street and Kriezotou Street (00 30 210 363 1850).
