2003: The Glasshouse, Edinburgh
2004: The Radisson SAS, Glasgow
2005: Mar Hall, Bishopston, near Glasgow
More Scottish hotel reviews
Edinburgh's The Glasshouse (pictured right), the only hotel nominated from the Scottish capital, where rooms start from £99, beat properties including Skibo Castle, Isle of Eriska and Boath House in Nairn to receive the award.
The 65-bedroom hotel, opened in June 2003, is architecturally striking, as the façade of a Gothic 19th-century church seamlessly blends into the modern glass and steel body of the property. It also has a roof garden and many rooms have a terrace. But design was not the hotel's only asset, according to the judges. Ambience, service, location and amenities all scored highly, as well as clientele, who in the past have included celebrity guests such as White Stripes, Will Young, Minnie Driver and Meryl Streep.
Other hotels vying for the trophy were Mar Hall in Bishopton, near Glasgow; One Devonshire Gardens in Glasgow; Skeabost Country House Hotel on the Isle of Skye and the Radisson SAS in Glasgow.
The coveted award was one of 13 given out at the inaugural Scottish Style Awards held in Glasgow's Tramway, a vast brick warehouse in the south of the city that's now an arts and entertainment venue. There were 25 judges from across Scotland's media, fashion and entertainment industries, who whittled down the winners.
Edinburgh was given another endorsement when a local nightspot won the most stylish bar award. Dragonfly is on West Port, the southern end of Grassmarket, a strip that will be familiar with anyone who's enjoyed a hen or stag party in Edinburgh or partied there as a student.
Even company director at Dragonfly, Kyles Dignall says of Grassmarket: "It's a mess of stag parties and vomit", but says his bar, which will be a year-old in December makes a very different statement. "We're creating a destination vibe with Dragonfly - it doesn't look like a bar and it's a departure from the brushed steel and brown leather look you get around George Street."
Also collecting an award, among Scotland's most stylish fashion designers and musicians was the country's most stylish restaurant, which went to Andrew Fairlie at The Gleneagles Hotel, beating competition from younger rivals including the trendy Oloroso in Edinburgh and Rhubarb restaurant at Edinburgh's Prestonfield House Hotel.
Andrew Fairlie's Michelin-starred eatery offers three courses for £60 from it's a la carte menu, which features French cuisine with a Scottish twist, mixing ingredient's from Paris' Rungis market with that from local suppliers. His signature smoke lobster dish, which smokes lobster shells over old whisky barrels for up to 12 hours is a firm favourite with regular diners.
