Casita Verde (casitaverde.com) is a cool place to go on Sundays to chill out — it’s a model ecological centre run by local volunteers. Try out natural beauty products, such as locally grown aloe vera, listen to acoustic music, make your own fresh juices and eat organically for almost nothing — everyone sits around a big table, then you wash your own plates.
On the Cala Tarida turning, just outside San Jose, is Can Verge (00 34-971 800041, canverger.com), a restaurant that does lovely fresh salads, great kebabs (£6) and fantastic pizzas (£9) from a wood oven. Perfect comfort food following a heavy night.
For something a little posher, head to the Hostal Salinas (971 308899, hostalsalinas.com), a new boutique hostal behind the sand dunes in, yep, Salinas, with surprisingly good-value deals at the restaurant — three courses for £13.50 (£16 in peak season). The food is traditional, but it has a few imaginative twists — promise me you’ll try the frozen almond and chocolate mousse with limoncello sauce.
In terms of lounging on the beach, one of my favourite places is Benirras, on the northern tip of the island, at the end of Carretera de Benirras. It’s quite well known now, but listening to the hippies drumming at sundown is still a magical — and free — experience. And don’t be afraid if you’re asked to join in.
No matter how many amazing places I find on the island, I still keep coming back to Cafe Mambo (cafemamboibiza.com), on the sunset strip in San Antonio. You’ll not find a more beautiful sunset, and on top of that, the soundtrack is provided by some of the best DJs in the world. After dark, the coolest pre-parties are held here — Defected in the House holds its on Saturdays from 8pm to midnight, and it’s free to get in, too. Make sure you come down and say hi. defected.com
THE CHIEF OF POLICE
Jose Ramon Serra is chief of police in San Antonio
Can Cosmi (Plaza de la Iglesia, Santa Agnes de Corona; 00 34-971 805020; closed Tuesdays) is a typical village shop in a little settlement on the outskirts of San Antonio, but it’s also a bar and restaurant. Locals come from all around the neighbourhood for its speciality — tortilla with potatoes and peppers (£6.30). Amazing.
Another great place for traditional Spanish food is Can Pilot (Travesia Isidor Macabich, San Rafael; 971 198293; closed Wednesdays; £18 for two courses). The frita de polp (fried octopus with potatoes and peppers) and the beef, which you cook yourself on a charcoal grill, are sensational, and the place is very authentic and traditionally rustic. Not surprisingly, perhaps, it is nearly always packed to the rafters with locals.
For something quite different, the Aquarium Cap Blanc (Carretera Cala Gracio, San Antonio; 871 700601; £4) is a marine aquarium that has been installed in a natural cave. It’s really quite dramatic. You can see lobsters, skate, octopuses, turtles and conger eels swimming about in what was once a smuggler’s hideaway. There are wonderful views of San Antonio bay from there, too.
The hippie market in the San Antonio marina is worth a visit. It’s open every evening except Sunday in the summer, selling sarongs, silver and jewellery.
My last suggestion — which is not something many people might immediately associate with Ibiza — is to visit a traditional Ibizan wine cellar, such as Can Maymo (www.bodegascanmaymo.com), Can Rich (bodegascanrich.com) or Sa Cova (699 054055). There, you can taste and buy the local wine (prices start at £6, rising to £17), as well as excellent olive oil.
