For larger groups, there are rooms with both twin beds and sofa beds. No restaurant and no breakfast, but nobody will starve in this part of New York. If feeling overcome by hunger head to nearby Takahachi Tribeca on Duane Street for sushi, or splurge what you have saved by having brunch at The Odeon. And it is sparklingly clean.

The Gershwin

THIS budget hotel celebrates its 100th birthday this year, in a typically arty style. It defies categorisation: it has dormitory beds from £21 a night, is popular with musicians, and has a floor dedicated to models at the start of their careers (as a result, the closets are especially large on the seventh floor).

There’s remarkably good art for the price as well, including a Campbell’s soup can signed by Andy Warhol by the lift, while the lobby boasts a Roy Lichtenstein. The hotel has a programme for young artists who stay in the hotel for free, decorating part of the hotel in the process. In summer, head to the roof terrace, where films are shown. The Gershwin. Broadway Inn

IN THE heart of New York’s neon-lit theatre district, the Broadway Inn is a pleasing refuge. It might not have lifts and views are minimal, but it offers continental breakfast in its flower-filled first floor lounge as part of the price.

All 41 rooms have microwaves, it’s very clean, and its friendliness is palpable. As a bonus, the front desk can arrange discounts, ranging from 25 to 40 per cent, on nearby shows, including Mamma Mia and 42nd Street. Finding somewhere to eat shouldn’t be a problem: this section of 46th Street is known as Restaurant Row.

Washington Square Hotel

THIS hotel caters to the generation that remembers the words to Blowin’ in the Wind, but who have come to expect the better things in life. Bob Dylan and Joan Baez shacked up here in the early 1960s.
