BERNSTEIN FESTIVAL
There’s nothing like tying up loose ends — to commemorate the 90th anniversary of Leonard Bernstein’s birth, the 65th anniversary of his debut with the New York Philharmonic and the 50th anniversary of his appointment as music director, the NY Phil and Carnegie Hall combine to present Leonard Bernstein: The Best of All Possible Worlds. About 50 events, including film screenings and concerts, spanning opera, musicals, classical and jazz, are planned for the festival, which runs until December 13. 212 247 7800; www.carnegiehall.org/bernstein ; tickets from £23
VILLAGE TART
You can’t move in certain parts of New York without running across somewhere that sells frozen yoghurt (or fro-yo, as it should never be known). The latest joints come with Pacojet machines — contraptions that can blend frozen fruits and other goodies without thawing them, giving you a chilly treat of a pud.
Village Tart takes all of this and gives it a welcome twist — booze. It has been granted a liquor licence, so you can order an elaborate cocktail to go with your dessert — a fine combination if ever there was one. 86 Kenmare Street, at Mulberry Street; opening later this month
ROCK’N’ROLL
If long hair and leather do curious things to you, then you will already know that there’s only one Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Except now there isn’t, as the original Hall and Museum in Cleveland has spawned a second, in New York’s SoHo, opening in November. The 25,000 sq ft venue will house Bruce Springsteen’s 1957 Chevy, among other musical memorabilia, and will detail New York’s prominent place in the history of rawk. 76 Mercer Street; www.rockhall.com
ELLA
Fancy a touch of refinement after a heavy day’s searching for the last of the dollar bargains? Head to Ella, a new piano bar and cocktail lounge that its owners claim will “channel the glamour of 1920s Hollywood”. Staff will be serving you cocktails dressed in suitably sexy 1920s-style ensembles and there will be an aura of dignified refinement. At least until you hit cocktail number three. 9 Avenue A, between 1st and 2nd Streets; 212 777 2230, www.ellalounge.com (coming soon); cocktails £7
WISE GUYS TOUR OF MANHATTAN
Catch the haunts of mobsters and Rat Packers alike on a 3½-hour tour that launches in December. Running up through Manhattan from Little Italy, it takes you to locations from gangster movies, the scenes of real-life hits, and Frank Sinatra’s hang-outs, then returns south for a final gelato at the cafe of John “Cha Cha” Ciarcia, last seen in The Sopranos. For more information, e-mail Tony Muia at info@asliceofpizza.com
SOLEFOOD NYC
Depending on whom you listen to, Solefood NYC is “a restaurant-themed, lifestyle-driven, custom sneaker boutique and art gallery” (them) or “bonkers” (us). What is agreed is that it’s cer- tainly not dull. Solefood has booths to sit in, trainers arriving on platters, clothing that comes in cardboard takeaway boxes, a ladies’ night on Thursdays and even, occasionally, food — but the main business here is the styling and restyling of exclusive footwear. That’s scribbling on trainers to you. 38 Lispenard Street, between Broadway and Church Street; www.solefoodnyc.com
LUCKY STRIKE LANES
Sleek white leather sofas, sexy cocktails, soft lighting and. . . balls. Lots of ’em, actually, at Lucky Strike Lanes, in Hell’s Kitchen, where you’ll find 26 state-of-the-art bowling lanes, full table service for cocktails and coconut shrimp small plates — and the Luxe Lounge, a private suite that comes with four lanes and a 20ft-wide cinema screen.
Barack Obama, Scarlett Johansson and Drew Barrymore are fans of the original in LA, so when it opens this week, expect NY’s trendy set, pretending not to be bothered that they’ve been forced to take off their shoes like everyone else. 624 West 42nd Street; 877 893 8259, www.luckystrikelanesnyc.com
