USP Many spas tend to stamp their perfume and stern philosophy on to a hotel, turning the whole place into a chlorine-stinking fat camp. Here the spa was just a part of the deal, like our own private pool shielded by walls of jasmine.

AMBIENCE An exotic setting of Islamic domes, gazebos and infinity pools bordering the desert and the Red Sea. Luxury but down-to-earth - I could be occasionally pummelled and kneaded without having to talk to divorcees about their Botox misadventures or to wear a bathrobe to dinner.

EXPERIENCE The spa, run by the reputable Banyan Tree chain -well-known for its pregnancy treatments - was wonderfully discreet. I started off with an excellent hair cut followed by the most delicious pregnancy rub imaginable. By the time she’d finished, the office-chair stiffness was blancmange. I also had a manicure and pedicure (which feel fantastic as your feet have so much extra weight to bear, and the baby’s calcium needs ravage your nails).

FOOD Even my bowl of muesli appeared, apologetically, from underneath a silver salver. I was delighted to find that they had one restaurant serving European and Egyptian specialities and another specialising in modern Indian, which satisfied my cravings for spicy food and yoghurt. Health never looked so inviting.

WALLET WATCH Prices range from £150 to £650 a suite per night, depending on season. Spa treatments cost extra – for example, a full body scrub is £22.50 and an hour-long aromatherapy massage £41. A one-day spa experience costs £65.
