IF TIME ALLOWS…

o Make for Potsdamer Platz, which has risen from the no-man's-land between East and West. One attraction is the Film Museum (00 49 30 300 9630, www.filmmuseum-berlin.de; £4).

o See the Byzantine-style Neue Synagogue (Orianenburger Strasse 29-30; 00 49 30 88 028300, www.cjudaicum.de; £2), opened in 1866, destroyed in World War II, and reopened 1995. Guards outside are a solemn reminder that old attitudes prevail.

o Make merry at the Love Parade (Tiergarten, second or third weekend in July; 00 49 3028 4620, www.loveparade.de; free), the biggest techno party in the world.

o Head to the Grosser Wannsee lake and Strandbad Wannsee inland beach, south of Berlin (about 50 minutes on the S-Bahn line 7) for summer windsurfing, water-skiing and sun worship.

o Take a tour: in a classic East German car, the Trabi (00 49 30 2759 2273, www.trabi-safari.de; from £14pp); or a Velotaxi, a bubble-like enclosed bicycle taxi hailed on the street; or the Panorama S-Bahn train (48-hour CityTourCard 48 costs £10).

o Visit the Jewish Museum (Lindenstrasse 9-14; 00 49 30 2599 3300, www.jmberlin.de; £3.40) in Kreuzberg, a striking zinc-panelled design by architect Daniel Libeskind; it charts the history of Jewish people in Germany in artefact and film.

o Go on to Topographie des Terrors (Stresemannstrasse 111; 00 49 30 2548 6703, www.topographie.de; free), pitched by one of the last remaining parts of the Wall: an absorbing open-air exhibition about the Nazi buildings that once stood on this site.
