Here are my top tips. Post your comments below if you have any you would like to contribute, or e-mail us at yoursay@timesonline.co.uk.
1. Leave plenty of time to get to airport. Think worst-case scenario. Check traffic information websites in case of snowdrifts, jams or motorway pile-ups. Check railway information websites for delays.
2. Prebook car parking as close to the airport as possible . It is more expensive than off site parking but easier to manage with children. If there are two adults travelling, designate one to drop the other at check in with the children and bags before parking the car. This saves having to manage children and baggage on and off buses. Repeat on the way home with one adult going to fetch the car while the other waits with the children.
3. Don’t be cajoled by pushchair averse partners into leaving your pushchair at home. Pushchairs provide somewhere for your baby to sleep. And back carriers, while they are all very well for long walks, will feel like a ton of bricks after two hours at the airport.
4. On the subject of pushchairs. Take the cheapest umbrella type rather than your swanky Bugaboo. You need to be able to fold it up and down easily and not care if it gets chucked around by baggage handling. Hang on to it as long as possible – the gate or, in some cases, the aircraft steps. You will have somewhere for your child to sleep and it’s also easier to feed a child sitting in a pushchair than on your knee.
5. Take enough baby supplies (snacks, nappies, wipes, spare set of clothes) in your hand luggage to cover you for delays. Don’t forget to put in your baby’s sucky cup to fill with bottles of water when you have passed through security.
6. Put everything you will need on the flight in one or two carry on bags with multiple sections. This will save you having to take everything out to find your child’s dummy or cuddly that has fallen to the bottom of the bag.
7. Many airports have special facilities for small children. Check the airport website so you know where to find the play area.
8. Going through security is tricky with preschoolers. The United States Transportation Security Administration has a section on its website with good general advice for travellers anywhere about getting small children and their stuff through the screening process. There is also good information about children with disabilities.
9.Check in advance what liquids you can take through security and save time by being prepared to hand over your transparent bag as soon as you reach security. Experience has taught me to put empty bottles and cups in the plastic bag too, as leaving them in hand baggage invariably leads to further checks.
10. Sounds obvious but do ensure all the children's passports are valid and that you have a safe, yet easily accessible, pouch to carry them in. Don’t let them carry their own. They will lose them.
