Street dance

Popping, locking, steppin' and wackin' are obligatory at the Let Me Dance Summer Camp.

Based at the Elmhurst School for Dance in Birmingham, it claims to be the only residential street- dance camp in the UK. Campers learn various styles of street dance - as well as some contemporary and ballet - and work towards a filmed performance on the final day.

Rock for all ages

Budding Avril Lavignes can sign up for a Become a Rock Star camp at the YMCA Fairthorne Manor, near Southampton. The course is run by a professional musician and is suitable for 8 to 16-year-olds of all abilities. The aim is to form a band and work towards performing show-stopping numbers at the end of the week concert.

Trashing hotel rooms and recreational drug use are definitely not on the menu. Children sleep under canvas in a tent village with wooden floors, while camp leaders sleep in adjacent tents and are available throughout the night to offer assistance if needed. Happy snappers

The children's activity-holiday specialist PGL has 26 themed camps this year. New for 2009 is a photography course for 10 to 16-year-olds, which gives them the chance to learn skills used by the pros. Participants also learn about Photoshop, retouching and professional lighting techniques.

Atheist camp

Originally conceived as an antidote to Bible camps in the US, Camp Quest is for “the children of atheists, agnostics, freethinkers, humanists or whatever other terms might be applied to those who hold to a naturalistic, not supernatural, world view”. With financial backing from the prominent zoologist and atheist Richard Dawkins, the first UK summer camp is being held at Mill on the Brue activity centre in Somerset from July 27-31.
