Green Spaces: Victoria Park, London

One of the judges in our 2008 Green Spaces Travel Awards explains why this park is his favourite nomination for May

VICTORIA PARK

When I first went on the London Eye and looked across the capital, I was surprised by the amount of green areas you could see.

The vista is largely thanks to the well-kept Royal Parks, but also to the many smaller council-run grounds such as Victoria Park.

The latter was founded in the mid-19th century in the East End area of Tower Hamlets and is bounded by two canals - Regents Canal to the west and Hertford Union Canal to the south. Its wide, tree-lined avenues, a fountain, and two small lakes makes it a wonderful example of an urban green space.

For many, it's a sanctuary away from the city; there are walkways for dog walkers and joggers, and open ground for picnics and weekend sport. It is also a popular venue for concerts and festivals and, like most public parks, it provides common ground for local residents and a haven where children can play.
