Read the judge's green questionnaire on Caerfai Bay camp site
What is it: a campsite on organic farm overlooking the Pembrokeshire coast. It’s owned by the farmer and his wife who run the organic farm (a few cows for beef but mostly they have dairy cows to produce organic milk and cheese) and set aside three fields for camping (they also have four cottages but we didn’t inspect those as it was specifically the campsite that was nominated).
Summary: it’s about as understated a place as you can imagine. The owner (who was a little embarrassed and bemused by the attention) is clearly passionate about alternative technologies and has been tinkering (in a very Heath Robinson way) with various innovative green technologies for years (e.g. his home-made biodigester that converts cow slurry to gas that heats the water!
But most of his technologies are for the farm rather than for the campsite… it is just a campsite after all so there aren’t really very many things he can do to ‘green’ it up (other than camping being low impact anyway)...
That said he does about as much as he could do - the showers are solar-powered and there’s recycling (and I liked the fact he’d resisted the tourist board’s insistence that he installs night lighting – which would disturb the animals) and he offers discount if you arrive on foot.
It's in a gorgeous spot: the fields look out over a beautiful bay and the Pembrokeshire Coastal Footpath runs alongside the campsite (though the static caravan park next door is ugly). More than 5,000 camp there every year and two campers I met over that weekend said they’d been camping all over the place for the last 20 years and think Caerfai is the best campsite in the world...
Need to know: Costs £6.50 per person per night or £4.50 if you arrive on foot - www.cawscaerfai.co.uk, 01437 720548.
NOMINATED BY: we stayed there on a walking holiday along the Pembrokeshire Coast Path this month, and they give discounts to people like us arriving on foot or by bicycle. It has a beautiful, natural setting in cliff-top fields overlooking the coast path. There are recycling banks and an organic farm shop on site. The energy used in the washing blocks comes from solar thermal and photo-voltaic panels, and a ground-source heat pump powered by a wind turbine. And it’s within easy walking distance of the tourist attractions in St David’s - Sian Moxon, London
ALSO NOMINATED BY: This year I am suffering from serious withdrawal symptoms - due to pressure of work we had to cancel our annual trip to Caerfai Bay Camp Site. This site nestles against Caerfai Farm with its organic shop serving fresh locally grown vegetables and cheese and milk made just yards away in the dairy - together with just enough to get you out of trouble when self catering (including bottle openers).
The milking sheds are just behind the shower blocks and its incredible to hear the clattering of activity, the cows mooing with Radio 2 playing in the background (apparently they give more milk when listening to the Radio).
I have been there with my family for the past five years for up to three weeks during the summer holidays. It is an outstanding green space. There is no place like it. We have a motor home and my husband does question why we always go to the same place but why search for anything else when you have found perfection.
The air is so clear, the fields, paths and camp site brimming with wild flowers - no sprays- no chemicals. We see butterflies and bugs that we have never seen anywhere else. The campsite is totally "natural", no gaming machines or loud music, kids are allowed to play but they make their games up on the green in the centre of Caerfai Bay Camp Site - they make friends and make up impromptu teams and laugh & shout as kids should do.
