Awards: certifed by soil assocation in 1993 - the owner says “it is the only organic farm in Wales that makes unpasteurised milk”.
Energy conservation: low energy lightbulbs, solar hot-water (thermal) system, on-site wind turbine, mains-supplied energy from a renewable energy, supplier EDF green tariff
Reducing waste: glass, plastic, cans, food waste (not paper) reycling facilities collected by a local firm, Greenacres. Cardboard is used to line ground under cow shed, then becomes compost.
Conserving water: Spray taps in shower heads, rainwater harvesting system for the biodigester. Water supply from two bore holes – one is drinkable other is for flushing toilets.
Conservation and wildlife: Swallows nest in the toilet block! Being organic is biggest asset for wildlife as they don’t use sprays or fertilisers. E.g. they’ve been overrun with badgers since they went organic.
He hasn’t succumbed to Welsh Tourist Board requests to build a Tarmac road to the campsite and have all night lights around the campsite – which would disturb local wildlife.
Ownership: Farmer David and his wife, Chris. They run it themselves - students work in shop in summer.
Local Employment: Do they have a policy for employing local people? “Yes, but they have Polish accents”!!
Food: They make milk, cheese and sell in the onsite shop along with lots of organic food but also other non-organic food and drink. He reckons 18% of business from shop is from selling his produce. Most of the food they sell (organic and non-organic) is local, such as cakes, pies, bacon, sausages, Pembrokeshire ham, beefburgers.
Activities and transport: Both owners have electric bikes. The owner has a 4x4 which he fills with veg oil (reclaimed from restaurants/rape seed oil). Owner said in Pembrokeshire you can get a £700 grant to convert your car (courtesy of welsh assembly and national park authority).
About 60-70% of campers bring their own bikes – it’s on route 4 of national cycle network. It normally costs £6.50 per person per night but if you arrive carrying your tent on your back it costs £4 pppn.
Getting there by public transport: mainline train to Haverford West then bus to end of road from where you walk about 1 mile to campsite.
What's it like to visit? Is it value for money? It's very cheap -but is a campsite after all, but the views and proximity to the coast are excellent value for money.
It’s a well-maintained campsite in a picturesque setting overlooking Caerfai Bay (a sheltered sandy beach) - that’s it big selling point. I spoke to two campers from London who said they’ve been camping for 20 years and this is their favourite campsite.
The owner is a maverick and has been tinkering with alternative energy technologies for 20 years. Though his ingenious homemade green technologies (ie the wind turbine and an innovative ‘biodigester’ which converts cow slurry into less polluting slurry to disperse on fields) are understated - guests would hardly know that the campsite is particularly green - though they can see the solar panels on the shower block, the adjacent recycling bins and the wind turbine in the field.
The farm is organic and his biodigester is innovative – he has filed for a patent. I checked it out with the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) and they say it’s a perfectly valid way of using slurry – but that’s more for the farm than the campsite.
On the downside it is right next door to the static caravan park, which is owned by his sister – it’s not as bad an eyesore as many caravan parks but it’s still pretty unsightly.
