Download, Donington Park, Leicestershire

The dad-rock Isle of Wight Festival is sold out, so if you really like to rock hard head to Download for all varieties of full-on guitar thrashing. This year veterans KISS headline along with Judas Priest, Lost Prophets and The Offspring.

Summer Solstice, Stonehenge, Wiltshire

A chance for the gainfully employed to rediscover their free spirits, the Summer Solstice falls on Saturday this year. Not a music festival as such - there's little else on the weeklend before Glastonbury - but it's a unique event populated by hippies, travellers, crusties, druids and a general rag-tag bunch of free-festival fans.

It is free to get in and, though there is no amplified music, there are usually plenty of bands of bongoes and other hippy-related entertainment. Gather at the site from 8pm on January 20. Last admittance to the free car parking is at 6am, with the site closing again after sunrise celebrations at 8.30am. All details are subject to change, check English Heritage's website for details closer to the date.
