There's dozens of events across Europe to tempt intrepid music fans out of their soggy comfort zones, and an increasing number of transport options and tour companies willing to help. At the end you'll find information on companies that can help you get to the more far flung options.

The list includes five changes from last year's selection, and they are spread even farther and wider. Of course the lineups are different, with some of this season's famous bands slogging their way around lots of the bigger events - along with some nice surprises and more quirky affairs on offer.

AUSTRIA
Frequency Festival, Salzburg - August 20-22

A new entry for 2009, Frequency takes place in the grounds of the Salzburg race track, and like another that takes place in similar surroundings, the sold out Rock-am-Ring in Germany, boasts a big lineup every year. This year acts announced so far include The Prodigy, Bloc Party, Pendulum and Kasabian.

BELGIUM
Rock Werchter - July 2-5

One of Europe's oldest festivals, the 35th Rock Werchter festival has an impressive lineup, with big name acts ranging from Coldplay and the Killers to Elbow and the Prodigy.

Not exactly exotic but easy to get to, it's a short hop by Eurostar to Brussels and on to Leuven where shuttle buses will whisk you to the site.
