Great Southern Railway, the company that runs Ghan services, has announced it is to double services from once a week to twice weekly return as of March 17, 2006 because of high demand for tickets. The new service will depart Adelaide every Friday and will return from Darwin every Monday. The transcontinental journey, which launched in February 2004 following the extension of the transcontinental rail line northwards from Alice Springs, covers 2,979 kilometres and passengers spend two nights on board.

Great Southern Railway boss, Tony Braxton-Smith, said: “We knew a journey on The Ghan across the continent from Adelaide to Darwin would have some appeal, but we’ve been amazed by the market response to date. There was strong demand earlier this year when we doubled The Ghan’s service through the peak season of May, June and July, and that has given us the confidence to offer the second service year round.”

“Some people have found it difficult to get tickets. Well, now we can say with confidence, space is now available, but as always it pays to book early. The Ghan gives our guests the opportunity to cross Australia in a unique fashion on a great railway icon,” he added.
