Travel writers always seem to recommend Anguilla which although having beautiful beaches is basically a very flat island. Why not come to Nevis, ? great beaches , tropical rainforest around a volcano and wonderful plantation style hotels and private villas to rent. Have a look on google.

A lot of these places are warm/hot but also humid. Like when you get out of the shower you are still sweating. Along with the humidity comes mosquitos too. The sun at places close to the equator will burn you bad. I think many people would prefer the warm/hot low humidity places like the desert/med.

If you're in North America, Florida's Scenic 30-A corridor on the Gulf of Mexico is breathtaking and you can drive there from many places in the Eastern United States.

Ahh! Australia. Where to start? Hyams beach, 3 hours drive south of Sydney on Jervis Bay. Squeeky pure white silica sand. Water as clear as the maldives....and fewer people. Rent a house on the hill overlooking the beach. Fraser island, Cape Tribulation, The Whitsunday islands. So much more.

"neon lit atrocity that is phuket" Perhaps the writer should have traveled along the island a little more or maybe the lure of the red lights proved too seductive. Judging Phuket by the southern beaches of Patong, Karong etc. is like warning a visitor to Windsor of the sleaze in Soho.

Has anyone who contributed to this article been to Malapascua (mentioned in Phillippines part)? Ok, looks quite nice however all accomodation is very, very basic, can't swim safely off beach (urchins hidden in seagrass). Great for scuba but that is it. Also, dynamite fishing still by locals.

I'm very happy you didn't mention Montego Bay, Jamaica. especially Round Hill or Mockingbird Hill Villa just across the road from Round Hill. Much better the place does not get inundated with grockles !
