Dramatic mountains, wild seas, remote glens and glinting lochs – the northern territory of the Scottish Highlands is a heart-stoppingly beautiful wilderness of tranquillity and space. With a rich history, culture and outstanding natural beauty, you’ll find everything the most active visitor, discerning diner or restless soul could wish for.
And this month, The Sunday Times Travel Magazine has teamed up with Scotland’s North Highland Tourism and Flybe to offer readers the chance to win a luxury weekend away for four in this captivating area. In addition, one runner-up will receive a Mey Selections hamper and a Castle of Mey Estate tweed-design rug.
You and three friends could be jetting off to Inverness, courtesy of Flybe (www.flybe.com), for a fantastic holiday in the northeast Highlands, an area famed for its undulating moors, sweeping sandy beaches and historic monuments. Accommodation during your two-night stay will be in the 15th-century Dornoch Castle Hotel, situated on Dornoch’s quaint market square and overlooking the town’s 800-year-old cathedral.
Your party will also have the opportunity to play golf at one of the world’s oldest links, The Royal Dornoch Golf Club. For more than 100 years, this internationally renowned institution has attracted golfers with its superb facilities and beautiful greens, counting famous names such as HRH Prince Andrew and actor Jack Nicholson as members. Here, you and your friends can test your golf skills with a round on the Struie Course, taking in the splendid views of the Dornoch Firth.
If the magnificent surroundings inspire you to see more of the area, you can explore the entire breadth of the North Highlands, touring this relatively undiscovered region in the hire car provided for the length of your stay. Discover the dramatic Achmelvich Beach (above) on the west coast, or head to the rugged north coast with its world-class surfing at Thurso.
Each member of the winning group, plus one lucky runner-up will receive a luxury food hamper from Mey Selections (available at www.mey-selections.com), containing delicious traditional produce from the area, such as whisky, cheese, honeys, conserves, chutneys, oatcakes, honey, oat biscuits and shortbread, as well as a Castle of Mey Estate tweed-design rug. With a design inspired by the North Highlands landscape, the tweed has been developed in conjunction with Johnstons of Elgin (www.johnstonscashmere.com), manufacturers of the finest Scottish cashmere and woollen products since 1797.
