ENTER OUR SUMMER IN THE CITY PHOTO COMPETITION
Entries are coming in thick and fast for our Summer in the City competition. Swimming, strolling, drinking a glass of wine, messing about in a canal boat or just sitting and watching the world go by - these are the things you love doing in cities.
YORK
Get up early, walk along the city walls and descend into the City to watch the sunrise over the Minster. Have brunch at Meltons Too, then work it off shopping on the Shambles. Relax on a riverboat then indulge in afternoon tea at Bettys. For fun chose the ghost tour or the Jorvic museum, for gastronomy head to Fossgate for oysters and Champagne. Who said it was grim up north? Karen Clegg, York
LONDON
I would spend the time exploring the riches of British produce at Borough and Smithfield Markets. I’d delve into Hatton Garden looking for sparkly treats made by fantastic, British designers. I’d dine in restaurants proffering fabulous British cuisine created by world famous British chefs. Then I’d grab a cup of tea and sit and watch the world go by in Hyde Park, thinking how lucky I am to be in fabulous London. V Hansford, Saffron Walden, Essex
LONDON
My ideal summer's day in London would be spent in Kew Gardens. Step into the Palm House and you are transported to the tropical rainforest. Prepare to be blinded by the humidity steaming up your glasses, before you get to see, feel and smell the exotic plants and fruits - cocoa, papaya, bananas... Hop across to the Waterlily House and giant Amazonian lilipads with florescent flowers leap into view while carnivorous pitcher plants dangle, menacing, from the ceiling. Exotic orchids await you in the Princess of Wales Conservatory. A whole summer is not enough to explore this haven. Nooraini Mydin, London
LEEDS
Shopping I can do any day in Leeds, but to go on a blue plaque trail is a revelation. To be told the history of the people who helped to make this city and walk in their footsteps, see the buildings they left behind for us, gives me a warm feeling. Louis Le Prince stood on Leeds Bridge in 1888 and recorded the first motion picture film - how good is that? Trevor Craddock, Leeds
LONDON
Alfresco lunch in Regents Park, while feeding the ducks there, followed by a ride on the top of a double-decker bus to the South Bank. An amble down past the London Eye, maybe taking in a few paintings at Tate Modern and then on to St Katherine Docks for a gawp at the yachts and a drink at the pub, before walking back past the Tower for the tube ride home. Gillian Coe, Kenton, Middlesex
PLYMOUTH
Catch a small ferry from Admirals Yard. A 15-minute ride lets you see the Plymouth Dockyard and the new developement of Royal William Yard. Alight and take a stroll through Mount Edgcumbe park, (owned by Plymouth Council but in Cornwall.)." Round off the day by watching the ships sailing into Plymouth Sound. Karen Turton, Devon
LONDON
Summer best spent in London consists of experiencing everything beneath its unpredictable skies and alluring architecture, beyond its great and many entrances. Be it in its parks or palaces or discretely nestled in cobbled quarters, restaurants of discerning menus await alongside motor-caded ways adorned by fashions of breathtaking array. The traveller is introduced to an unfolding storehouse of world culture, history and a city of modern vivacious splendour. New and old perfectly aligned to delight, inspire and enthrall this city seeker! Ronan Ferguson, Strabane, County Tyrone
