Unlike most Britons with second homes on the Continent, Jane Howell is not an expert in how to get the best deals from easyJet and Ryanair.
She flies herself in her own aircraft, having just become the first British owner of one of a new generation of very small, relatively cheap jets.
Cruising at nearly 400mph at 41,000ft, well above most commercial airliners and any bad weather, the Cessna Citation Mustang takes less than two hours to fly from Farnborough airport in Hampshire to Milan.
A Ryanair Boeing 737 would be a little faster but Ms Howell never has to endure the slow shuffle through Stansted security queues or the scrum at the gate for the least uncomfortable seats. Farnborough’s car park is just a few yards from the new private jet terminal, and it takes only two minutes to get to the aircraft door. Nor does the 47-year-old entrepreneur, who made her fortune by developing and then selling an office interior design business, miss the absence of a trolley service. She often stops for lunch at a small airport in France’s Champagne region, loading a few cases of wine into the luggage hold before taking off again.
The jet will allow her to divide her time between her homes in London, Salzburg and Portofino on the Italian Riviera.
Small airports across Europe are preparing for a rapid growth in private jet travel in the next five years. A mode of travel that was, until recently, the preserve of the super-wealthy has become affordable to people who never appear in any rich list.
British operators have ordered 200 very light jets, according to Ascend, an aviation consultancy. Half a dozen models, which all weigh less than 10,000lb (4536kg), are being introduced this year. The six-seat Mustang, costing about £1.3 million, is not the cheapest but Ms Howell chose it because it is simple for a single pilot to fly. Commercial aircraft are required to have two pilots but she very rarely has another pilot next to her. Her husband does not have a pilot’s licence, so there are never any arguments over who will take the controls.
She used to fly propeller-driven aircraft and had a few safety scares, including an engine failure over Exeter and loss of cabin pressure over mountains in Greenland. “The big advantage of a light jet is that it is much faster and gets you through the bad weather much more quickly. This aircraft also alerts you to other traffic and the display shows you where they are, so you feel much safer.”
Ms Howell said that her journey plans were sometimes affected by the same factors that delay commercial flights, such as fog or air traffic control problems. “The difference is that I can check these things out before I leave home and alter my route or change the time I travel. I do not get stuck in packed airport departure lounges, waiting ages for announcements. The older I get, the more frustrating I find all the uncertainty and queueing of commercial flights.”
The environmental impact of aviation has recently begun to cause her more concern, but she said: “The Mustang is one of the quietest and most fuel-efficient jets. Everyone has to make their own decision on how they want to live and mine is that I am going to fly my own jet.”

Well done Ms Howell - ASAP I'll be next in-line for a Cessna Citation Mustang. I have a PPL/Night/IMC. Think a full IR would be nice to get the Mustang on the airways. Anyone know if Ms Howell has an IR - I guess it will be a US one, as I know her Citation is on the N register.

Must be a pretty damn expensive game. I assume the aircraft must devalue at say 10% a year, plus you have the "lost interest" on the £1.3M so together that is £200,000 per annum before you even get started.
Maintenance, fuel, landing fees and the undoubted stress of being the pilot. You won't save any time because you need to book flight plans, check weather charts, etc.
I think we have to accept that this kinda thing is just a toy for fun. On that basis I have no issues at all, but pretending that it is time saving, cheaper, greener, or even less stressful than jumping on a regular flight - is insulting to the intelligence.
Even the last comment was a "joke". You hardly ever get "over booking" on european flights these days especially as you can book-in online. So "queues" to check-in are also optional if you just fly with hand luggage and have enough clothes at each of your three houses (likely I feel in this case).

How long before there's a post bleating about her carbon footprint and how she will be single-handedly destroying the planet
Derek E, Erskine,
interesting opinion that "everyone has to make their own decision on how they want to live"
If we all chose(or were able to choose)her option then some countries would be under water and she would need a jet with floats on it to land.
Spare us the "concern" about the environment and dont try to justify it by telling us how fuel efficient your jet is.
pg, shrewsbury,
Modern PrivatJet Aircraft fly cleaner, more efficiently and can fly more flexible routes, landing at less frequented local airfields, which shortens time spent in so called holding patterns, thus saving huge amounts of kerosene. People seem to forget that worldwide air travel began with PrivatJet Aircraft or Business Aviation. An increasing number of Private Aircraft operators belong to Carbon Offset programms. PrivatJet manufacturers are the cutting edge of technological development in the Aviation Business. Last but not least, people also seem to forget that those who utilise PrivatJet aircraft are the worlds employers, so if they couldn't work efficiently and productively, they wouldn't remain competitive and wouldn't be able to employ us, and without jobs, we couldn't afford to travel at all............happy landings!

i'm a private pilot and thought about purchasing the eclipse 500. similar to the above but half the price but on top of the listed negatives you also have to consider: you cannot have a beer, cannot go to the toilet once airborne, cannot have a snooze and its barely a holiday if you have 100 things to think about and 2 hrs of intense concentration if you are a single pilot.
i vote for stanstead too! you can buy viz and the times, have a burger, check out ipods and on board- whoknows -you may get to sit next to someone really fit!

Now, tell me what is the level of carbon emissions compared to that generated by a seat in one of easyJet's aircraft? I believe they are exempt from any of the "green" taxes that airline passengers pay. How long before these private jets are banned ?
David Bland, Madrid, Spain
I guess she's not worried about her carbon foot print then!
SImon Lawrence, Thatcham, Berkshire / UK
It's a shame this article didn't include the carbon released. I suspect that the value would have been enormous in comparison to the commercial equivalent. Stopping off to pick up a couple of case of Champagne simply adds insult to climate injury !
I would prefer to to paraphrase the article and say that it's wonderful splitting your life between London, Salzburg and Portofino but spending your life in airports is a real drag. Everyone has to make their own decision on how they want to live.
Spending, what must be to her, peanuts on cheap fuel sounds great until you consider the enormous carbon footprint involved. Should we be publicising this type of lifestyle in this day and age when the average person is being encouraged to walk to the shops and cycle to work ?
Carlos, Bristol, UK
Mmmmmm...£1,600 for a two hour flight to Milan and back. doesnt sound very economical to me.And thats before factoring in insurance, purchase price and airport parking ! No thanks. Think I will put up with the 2 hours at Stanstead and the overpriced, poor quality food of Easyjet and Ryannair for £50.
Nick W, Hampstead, England
The article forgot the most important detail - no over-booking of seats, and no standing in queues waiting to book-in! A sensible Lady!
