Do you miss those days when the travel agent would send you a folder of documents by snail mail, perhaps even with a fact sheet about where you’re going to, telling you what clothes and currency to take? Now we’re all planning our own holidays, booking flights and hotel separately, your itinerary is just a bunch of emails cluttering your inbox.
No more – Tripit is offering a service to bring back the travel wallet, so you’ve got something to stuff in your bum bag when you set off on your adventure.
The site brings together flight, hotel and car rental bookings to supply a single itinerary, and adds information such as daily weather forecasts, local maps, city guides and updates from other useful travel websites.
These include Seatguru, for its advice on getting the best spot on the aircraft, Flickr, for its travel photos so you can get a sneak preview of where you’re going, or find photos you’d like to take yourself, and Eventful, to see what’s going on in your chosen destination.
It’s a handy service – the only hassle is having to manually enter your reservation details, plugging in each confirmation number and arrival and departure dates. The more pedantic travel planners will love it – at the end you have a customised itinerary, with a picture at the top, directions where you need them, city guides, weather, and so on – and you can share the itinerary with other friends on Tripit.
The US bias of the site doesn’t just show in the spelling – it didn’t recognise a European airline that I entered on one of my itineraries and it couldn’t find the Oman hotel that I wanted directions to – so there’s some work still to do (the site is currently in Beta).
We love: the finished product – a neat itinerary that will spare you carrying reams of print-outs in your carry-on, the album of Flickr photos that appear when you enter the city you’re visiting, the Tripclipper tool that will allow you to add weblinks of info to your trip details, to save more print-outs.
We hate: the time it takes to upload your trip details – can’t they do some more nifty importing?
* I've been told by Tripit that a nifty service allows users to email travel confirmation details to the Tripit team, who will compile the itinerary for you - removing the time-consuming manual element. Tripit accepts that the service is not well promoted at this stage, but it is called the "Itinerator”, and emails should be sent to plans@tripit.com.
