BA INCREASES SURCHARGES AND FARES
British Airways has raised fuel surcharges for the fourth time this year, adding £24 to the cost of a long-haul flight for first- and business-class passengers. This brings the levy on flights of nine hours or more to £266 return. The surcharge for economy passengers remains unchanged, but the airline has increased long-haul fares by 5% for all classes.
WELSH PLAY NAME GAME
Cardiff airport could become Tom Jones International under a rebranding exercise being carried out by the owners. “We’re consulting widely, and the name’s been suggested, along with Nye Bevan and Dylan Thomas,” said the managing director, Patrick Duffy. “The idea of naming an airport after a famous local personality has worked well for Liverpool, with John Lennon. But no decisions have been made as yet.”
NO CHANGE AT CHATTANOOGA
In the past three years, US security screeners have accumulated more than $1m (£500,000) in loose change left behind by departing passengers, it has been announced, but the amount varies widely across the nation. The three-year total for Los Angeles International airport topped $89,000, while at Chattanooga Metropolitan airport in Tennessee it was just $1.20. At least, that’s what the screeners said.
ORLANDO TO OPEN ‘LONDON EYE’
Visitors to Orlando will soon be able to soar 400ft above the resort in a £100m replica of the London Eye, with views for 25 miles in all directions. “It’s really going to help people to understand Orlando and what they can do here,” said Florian Bollen, chairman of Great Wheel Corporation.
LOOT ON SHOW
Paintings looted by the Nazis from the homes of French Jews have gone on display in Paris. Fifty-three works, including many whose prewar owners were never traced, form the core of the exhibition, entitled Looking for Owners. The show, which features artists including Delacroix, Ingres, Monet and Seurat, runs until October 26 at the Museum of the Art and History of Judaism (www.mahj.org).
ARE WE THERE YET?
Parents dreading the plaintive backseat whimpers that start the moment they set off on holiday might want to visit www.greatlittleadventures.co.uk. The online travel guide is offering an audio collection of four Horrid Henry stories for free: read by Miranda Richardson, they’re in downloadable format for iPods and other MP3 players. MUSHEUM OF VODKA
The latest addition to St Petersburg’s manifold cultural attractions is the Museum of Russian Vodka, which opens on Tuesday. At the time of going to press, however, it was unclear what the museum would contain, what it would charge and whether vodka would be given out. When we called to check, staff shouted at our reporter in slurred Russian.
