The holiday plans of thousands of Britons could be disrupted this summer because of strike action by Passport Service workers.
Around 3,000 members of the Public and Commercial Services Union working at regional passport offices as well as 68 interview offices will walk out from today in a dispute over pay and office closures.
The strike is expected to last three days but could cause wide spread disruption in what is one of the busiest times of the year. On average around 16,500 passports are issued every day by the Passport Service, but this figure is much higher ahead of the peak summer holiday period.
The seven regional passport offices affected by the strike are: London, Liverpool, Belfast, Glasgow, Peterborough, Newport and Durham.
The dispute at the Identity and Passport Service centres around a below-inflation 2.5 percent pay offer, and concerns that resources are being diverted from passport processing to the introduction of ID cards.
The National Identity Scheme is expected to be introduced from 2011. It will offer British nationals a choice of a separate identity card, passport or both.

If everyone asks for a pay rise together thats called an inflationary wage spiral.
No one will think they will lose but everyone will feel better off (a bit like PFIs or stealth tax).
Andy, Surrey,
Welcome to NuLabour's Britain. What a cess pit - full of public sector greedy maggots from MP's downwards. If they don't like the pay, they should get a real job in what's left of our industry. Oh no - that means working for a living, trying to make a profit whilst burdened with red tape and taxes.
Bob, Cowes, UK
Is it right that people who have worked hard for a holiday should suffer? You know what it's like.. Come the Summer, there is always (it seems) someone out to ruin it because they think that they will get more money. Like the French air traffic controllers for example. We live in a ME society.
Paul, Exeter, United Kingdom
Well here we go again more strike action the bin men and now the passports, but the point is that low paid people cant live on a low wages in an environment like this one, as this government seeks higher pay for them selfs for a job they havent done in the first place, unless you think wrecking this country is a good idea and telling others to do as they are told and work for an unliveable amount, I do hope you stop to think on the work for the dole idea that unemployment would be a thing of the past if only people where given a liveable wage, I believe this is just the start of things to come good old labour well I wish it was.

Your article is factually incorrect about choice. From the ID card scheme official website: "The National Identity Scheme will eventually become compulsory. This means that all UK residents over 16 will need to have an ID card."
Kerri, Truro,
Quite right, Paul from Exeter. In fact, instead of moaning about not getting a good enough pay rise in order to meet the rising cost of absolute luxuries such as fuel and food, they should all volunteer to work for free while standing to attention and singing God Save The Queen. The parasites...
Sam Tana, Preston, UK
Paul, you're a fool to say that. Personally I am proud to see people actually protesting. Britain has become so apathetic recently, look at the fuel situation, we need a good old fashioned stike or two to make sure we're not ignored. Unless, you'd like to continue moaning over the garden fence?

Well isn't this just another example of some nasty selfish people (Passport Service workers) spitting on their own countrymen and women?
A completely uncaring and un-patriotic act. They should all be fired and have to apply to have their jobs back. Stuff them.
