STAY OUT OF THE BATCAVE
Ugandan authorities are warning tourists to avoid contact with bats following the death of a 40-year-old Dutch tourist from an ebola-like virus after an excursion to a breeding site. The victim died after contracting the fatal Marburg haemorrhagic fever in the Maramagambo forest, a popular tourist attraction between Queen Elizabeth National Park and Kabale. “People should not think about amending their travel plans to Uganda, but should not go into caves with bats,” said Gregory Hartl, of the World Health Organisation.
LUFTHANSA MISERY
As the indefinite strike by Lufthansa’s ground and cabin crews begins to bite, the German carrier has announced the cancellation of one in 10 flights. More than 70 daily flights to short-haul destinations have been cancelled and the carrier has announced the curtailment of six long-haul services to America, India and Dubai. Lufthansa says it will “undertake all efforts to offer alternative travel” to those affected by the strike and advises passengers to check its website before travelling.
CARRY ON RYANAIR
The Irish no-frills carrier Ryanair is considering a ban on checked luggage for some flights in an attempt to cut costs after an 85% fall in profits. The airline said a hand-luggage-only rule could be introduced for some early-morning and midweek departures, but only on nontourist routes. Ryanair has also announced it will cease operations from seven airports this winter.
