11.05am: A spokesman for Manchester Airport says it is open as usual, but that services are subject to delays of between 30-90 minutes and up to three hours in exceptional cases.
11am: Lufthansa AG, Air France, KLM, Alitalia and Iberia have all cancelled flights to the UK until this afternoon at the earliest.
10.55am: Eurostar is laying on extra trains between Waterloo station and Paris and Brussels to help with increased demand from people whose flights were cancelled. National Express said it was operating coach services as normal to UK airports, but delays were “inevitable”.Virgin Trains is accepting passengers with airline tickets between Manchester and London today.
10.45am: KLM spokesman Hugo Baas said the airline had canceled five flights to Heathrow by midmorning. "We’ve canceled five flights so far, and the backlog for people traveling to and through London is in the hours. That’s going to create a ripple effect throughout the day, and increase as long as the airport remains closed."
10.25am: Heathrow airport operator BAA says that all incoming short-haul flights (those from the UK and Europe) to Heathrow had been cancelled for the time being. Air France cancels five flights from Heathrow to Paris today
10.20am: Two-mile tailbacks reported on the M11 into Stansted.
10.15am, Gatwick: Only nine of 18 easyJet flights have managed to take off this morning. An easyJet official shouts to check-in passengers: "There is no point joining the queue if their flights are leaving after 9am. You are not going anywhere. Go and got a coffee, get yourself sorted and I will have more news at 11.15am." The passengers give a round of applause.
10.05am: Ryanair announces it is waiving baggage fees for hand luggage that has to be checked in today.
