There are websites based on blogging, most have adapted to Twitter and many focus on user generated content. But is any travel website closer to offering the full package?
The ten websites featured in my latest round up are not the holy grail, but innovation is very much alive and well in niche areas.
Tripbod thinks I want a personalised itinerary from local experts while nowfly hopes I’ll book a hotel on the back of a flight booking. Meanwhile Joobili thinks I want snazzy web tools to help me plan my holiday.
One trend is the use of ground-based experts - a concept pioneered by sites including Spottedbylocals and Thebloggersguide.com). The million dollar question is whether we’d pay for that knowledge. Tripbod hopes I will pay £11, but it’s a hard sell given that guidebooks, blogs, forums and commercial travel sites already offer so much for free.
Mark Hodson, editor of 101 Holidays, says the definition of expert is changing. There is still the guidebook author, travel journalist or tour operator/travel agent. And recommendation from friends and family. But like me, Hodson is sceptical as to whether people will pay for locally sourced knowledge.
However, more information on which to base our decisions can't be bad. Including our old friend Tripadvisor.
Says Hodson: “User generated content is great because it is free, or very cheap, and people trust it. They know about rogue reviews on TripAdvisor, but it has a critical mass that means it works.”
TripAdvisor now wants to supply me with destination guides as well as hotel reviews. And sell me flights. But can one website do it all? And isn't our nature to browse several sites anyway?
Frank Skivington, vice president commercial of Skyscanner told me: “Our feeling is that we can’t do everything right now.” And he's not alone. While most of the big sites are adding functionality, there is no sense that one site is in pole position.
Skyscanner has this month added holiday search on top of its flights search but rules out hotel reviews, for now. Meanwhile, Nowfly is to add hotels and car hire, plus more travel tips as part of its latest site release.
“Most travel websites, from airlines to online travel agents, are looking to branch out beyond their core offering – once they have the user on the site, you want to make the most of the visit,” says Skivington.
Research from Google earlier this year found that the average travel customer makes 12 online searches and visits 22 websites over 29 days before booking a holiday.
