There are some destinations for which it is often hard to find good
information. Mongolia is one of these but there are two websites that I
would like to recommend. They are www.ub-mongolia.mn
and www.mongolianresorts.com.
Both of these websites provide a lot of information, are easy to navigate
and fun.
Christopher de Gruben, Ulan Bator, Mongolia
Since nearly 20 million people in the world flew for free using their air
miles last year, it seems only fitting that there's a place on the web for
these frequent flyers to talk about their miles and more - www.flyertalk.com
- with nearly 7 million posts it seems to be the place. Randy
Peterson, Colorado Springs
I have always felt that you never get the "right" information that
you want about a destination when making plans... so I built my own web
site! www.myMAPofSeychelles.com
aims to give you a full virtual tour of the main islands of the Seychelles -
the areas, the beaches, the towns and the hotels so that you can make a
really informed choice about a destination. So often I have heard people say
that "Oh yes, the Maldives - Indian Ocean - just like the Seychelles,
been there, done it - it's all the same!" Well, the reality couldn't be
further from the the truth, the difference between the places is phenomenol. David
Clarke, Halifax, Yorkshire
You should look at www.flightplanners.co.uk
for some really good deals. They seem to be able to find flights that are
not available on other websites and have saved me £100s. Martin
Treble, Hatfield, Herts
A wonderful review of key sites. One I quite like is www.hiddeneurope.co.uk
for its quirky coverage of Europe's unsung corners. No glitz at all, but
heaps of really evocative descriptions of places and communities from the
Arctic to the Med, from the Atlantic to the Urals. Saeran
Hughes, Aberystwyth, Wales
If you're interested in birdwatching and the birds of Asia by far the best
place to look is www.birdtourasia.com.
Not only do they have scheduled tours but you can also get them to tailor
make a tour for you and friends and they will guide. It's also great to read
about the exploratory trips the guides make to new regions. John
Eaton, Derby
I found a very innovative travel guide that displays all tourist attractions
and activites in the United States at the same time on a single map, so if
you zoom into any city or rural area, you can explore all things to do. It's www.happymappy.com.
You can display using your choice of Google Maps, Yahoo Maps or Microsoft's
maps. The detail is amazing, for instance, if you zoom into the Disney parks
in Florida, they have every ride identified, so you can take a virtual tour
of the theme parks before going there. Unfortunately, it only covers the US
so far. Scott Hillingdon, Dallas
There are so many people experiencing problems with cancelled flights and
difficulties with obtaining compensation that I feel I should direct people
to the following site - born of personal experience. www.euroconsumer.org.uk
gives details of your rights and on levels of compensation, www.moneyclaim.gov.uk
provides a means of getting that compensation online. I recently claimed for
a shorthaul 'delayed' flight and obtained compensation of £500 for a £40
cheap-flight delay of 6 hours. Forget the frustration of trying to be nice
to your airline. If they have failed to compensate you they are breaking the
law. Sue them in your pyjamas from your living room. All fees are added to
your online claim so it doesn't cost a penny. Large companies do not like
the expense of defending - invariably more than the compensation claimed -
so make the effort and solve your Christmas present funding problems - and
get the satisfaction of poking the bad guys in the eye. David
von Janowski, by email
Sites that make use of Google Maps (otherwise known as mashups) are great
travel resource. I keep a long list on my blog at: http://googlemapsmania.blogspot.com.
PC Magazine recently put me in the Top 99 Undiscovered Websites under the "Travel"
category. Mike Pegg, Ontario, Canada
If Austin Powers were going to visit Las Vegas, this is the site he would use: www.AmericanLowLife.com
lists everything (I mean everything!) to do in Las Vegas plus ways for
like-minded visitors and locals to connect. And it's totally free. Yeah,
baby, yeah! Bruce Dyer, Las Vegas
Look at www.whatsonwhen.com
- it tells you about all the latest stuff going on in the world and cities
including sports, music and festivals. Sebastian Sa Nogueira,
Portsmouth
I love the idea of eco-friendly travel, but I'm not so keen on the idea of
staying in mud huts in wildlife parks. So I was glad to find http://jamble.blogspot.com,
which has regular green city guides with tips of eco-friendly attractions
and accommodation. John Everett, Leeds
I have found a unique site that isn't commercial, but simply shows a photo a
day of Paris (and over 100 other cities). Paris Daily Photo (www.parisdailyphoto.com)
was started by a "friendly Parisian" to disclose unknown places in
the City of Light. Since he launched this idea, many other cities have
joined him to share their cities from a local's point of view. Michael
Salone, Paris
www.gringoes.com is an
invaluable site for anyone thinking of travelling to or moving to Brazil.
Nice design, lots of useful information and a lively discussion forum. Kieran
Gartlan, Sao Paulo, Brazil
As a budget traveller I like to hit the road with a backpack whenever I can.
I've found www.hostelbookers.com
a great resource for booking hostels in advance of arriving at a
destination. No booking fees means competitive prices, and all hostels are
rated by others on the gringo trail, so you get a good idea of what to
expect on arrival - Simon Crerar, London
When I want to read some good travel writing, mixed in with some pithy
comment, interviews and news, I check out www.thetransitcafe.com.
The writing is fresh and best enjoyed over a long black. Ian
Jarrett, Perth, Western Australia
I've found www.meethalfway.com
really useful for keeping in contact with some old friends that have moved
away. I've even started using it to organise some business meetings now too
with really positive results. Basically the website finds suitable venues
halfway between your address and another address. By suitable I mean the
system allows you to specify the kind of venue you are looking for, e.g.
restaurant (including cuisine), bar, cafe, hotel, B&B etc. What I really
like is that you can be a little more specific and say that you only want to
go somewhere child friendly or pet friendly or, and this has been really
useful for me lately, as has wifi internet access. A simple site that has
changed my day to day life and made meeting up much easier and not just a
little fun. Steven Wilber, Birmingham
If you like trekking, mountain biking, rafting, kayaking, mountaineering,
paragliding, 4w-driving and more, then visit www.outdooralbania.com/index.html.
Albania is one of the lesser-known travel destinations in Europe. Most of
its outstanding landscapes and monuments have remained hidden from the eye
of the traveller. Outdoor Albania uses experienced and licensed guides and
most of their guided tours and programmes are within anyone's reach, while
others will satisfy the exigencies of the skilful adventurer. The tours are
enriched with cultural visits, showing the most interesting historical and
cultural monuments of Albania. I really discovered a new culture so near to
home [and very cheap (BA tickets £150 return]). An amazing Outdoor Albania
holiday! Gentian Agalliu, Leeds
What many people look for online, but rarely find, is an online guide that
tells it like it is... without the travel agents' waffle. For anyone heading
to the island of Koh Chang, Thailand, www.iamkohchang.com
is a must. Run by an English guy who's been living there for a few years,
it's a fun, irreverant and highly informative look at what the Thai tourist
authority really does call "The Oriental Eden of the East." Kim
Fletcher, Manchester
I never go away without using www.dontforgetyourtoothbrush.com
- it is a reminder list for ALL of the things you need to do before you go
away and a packing list. It isn't that I don't know what to take I just love
the piece of mind I have knowing I have a fully tailored and interactive
list that I can rely on to send me reminder emails and piece of mind that I
haven't forgotten anything! Alexa Derbyshire, Loughborough
You can get the latest information on new budget airline routes from www.low-cost-airline-guide.com.
Their route database automatically updates daily to ensure you are always
working with the most accurate information. Martin Petersen,
Edinburgh
Frustrated by the lack of good and unbiased information for travel to South
and Central America, I have launched www.ontheroadtravel.com.
We provide unbiased recommendations and advise for independent travelers to
the region. We do all the research ourselves and hire local editors to make
sure that you get an 'insider's view' into the local culture (including a
daily calendar of events, a cultural cheatsheet and more) and, more
importantly, that it stays up to date. Jen Hamilton, San
Francisco
I've found no website that gives a full list of air carriers servicing a
European point to point route until I stumbled on to an SAS subsiderary
airline's sight that listed competitor's flights and sold you their tickets
at competitive rates. Check out www.wideroe.no/index.asp
for more complete list of available air flights. Kevin Ferguson,
Singapore
www.cracow-life.com is
great for Krakow and other Polish cities. It is easy to use and well laid
out with lots of useful information about what's going on in the cities. Frances
Bradshaw, Sherborne
For train information around the world, look no further than www.seat61.com.
Run by a seasoned train user who works in the industry, it covers literally
every country in the world, including timetables on popular routes, likely
prices as well as that most valuable of commodities - online photos of what
to expect. Alex Banks, Birmingham
This family travel site appears to be a relatively new site, however, it
provides useful information for hand-picked family holidays. There's a
discussion forum too: http://takethefamily.com.
Neil Lake, Manchester
A friend recommended www.holidayexcursions.com
a couple of months ago and I used it to book three excursions for my recent
holiday in the Canaries. It allowed me to browse what was available in my
resort, book the days and times that suited me and the e-tickets were
emailed to me. Straightforward, "Does exactly what is says on the packet",
and not trying to sell you all sorts of other "travel products".
Oh and the prices were about 10% cheaper than in the resort (I checked when
I was there!). Diane Rodger, Leeds
Crich Tramway Village (www.tramway.co.uk)
in Derbyshire not only houses the UK's largest collection of vintage trams
but also offers a fantastic value family day out for only £24 for a family
of five. Cara Merchant, Crich Tramway Village, Matlock,
Derbyshire
When I was looking for up to date information on travelling and doing
volunteer work in Sri Lanka last month, I found the Lonely Planet Thorntree
Forum (http://thorntree.lonelyplanet.com)
invaluable. You do have to sift out the professional posters with a
commercial ulterior motive, but being able to benefit from the genuine
experiences of recent travellers is a great way to plan ahead, save time and
money and hear of otherwise unpublicised small volunteer projects and local
events. Marisa Piccioni, Huddersfield
Whilst looking for information and inspiration for a holiday to India, I came
across this site: www.colours-of-india.co.uk.
It's a fantastic site with loads of information and beautiful images. On top
of that, the people at the end of the phone were amazing. They really know
their stuff which saved me from trawling through endless guidebooks. I had a
fantastic trip and will definitely go back to Colours for future trips to
Asia. John Davies, London
For anyone intending on visiting the real Spain I suggest this site dedicated
to a part of Galicia that has maintained its traditional values and is yet
to be discovered: www.arosanorte.net.
This site has everything for the perfect holiday and is packed with
photograghs for you to judge for yourself. Having been there three times I
found this site ideal for researching where to stay and where to eat. If you
are a lover of excellent food, especially seafood, you must check this out! Nigel
Whitcher, Christchurch, Dorset
I am one of those "sad" frequent cruisers! An excellent website for
reviews of ships and ports is www.cruisecritic.com.
We have recently cruised French Polynesia on Tahitian Princess. Lots of tips
on the ship and good things to do in the various islands. We know people who
have used it to book guides in cities. It is an American website where
people just write up their thoughts and opinions. Sandra
Sheppard, Staffordshire
The site I think that most deserves to get into your top 100 is a relatively
new company, www.sportlived.com.
They specialise in gap year travels based around sports in the southern
hemisphere and I cannot recommend them highly enough. Both myself and my
brother have spent an amazing few months in Australia with the help of this
site, myself playing and coaching cricket and my younger brother coaching
and playing rugby. They also offer holidays for the gap year student who
wants to travel to the southern hemisphere but finds it a bit daunting. All
in all, 10 out of 10 and would recommend it to anyone who is currently
trying to plan their year out before or after uni. Neil Dole,
Brighton
I was surprised to see that no car hire companies made the top 100, I have
been using www.arguscarhire.com
for about two years now, there low cost car hire goes well with the low cost
flights I get from www.ryanair.com
and www.flyglobespan.com.
Kim Burns, Glasgow
For a simple-to-use, comprehensive guide to Bed and Breakfast accommodation in
all parts of the country, as well as overseas, and especially within the
less expensive end of the market I recommend www.a1tourism.com.
I used the site recently and ended up in a super little village cottage at a
fraction of the price of the usual commercial hotels. Richard
Rogers, Camborne, Cornwall
I noticed that you only include two private accommodation websites in your
top 100, both British. I recently used the services of http://hassle-free.org.uk
who arrange accommodation using French and Spanish sites too (the owners
speak both languages). As a result, I was offered a much wider choice of
accommodastion in Denia (on the Costa Blanca) than either of your two
featured sites. Ian Richards, Basingstoke, Hants
A non-commercial site, a labour of love, covering the Greek islands and the
naturist beaches that abound there is www.barefoot.info.
If you are a naturist this is a god-send; if not - try it, nothing is
better. Lawrence Thornington-Jones, Birmingham
I recently went on a surfing holiday to Lanzarote with Zoco
Travel. Six of us went on the holiday and although we are keen surfers,
some of us are better than the others. Therefore we needed to go somewhere
that was good for beginner and intermediate surfers. Our first impression of
the website was that it was obvious they knew about surfing. The level of
information provided on the website about the locations and local surf
conditions was second to none and meant that we went to exactly the right
destination. The staff could answer all our questions, from what wetsuits to
bring to where was best to eat. For a small fee Zoco arranged a local surfer
to show us round and point out the best places to surf. This, along with the
printed surf guide they provided meant that we could maximise our time in
the water. Ian Wraith, Sheffield
What? No mention of www.columbusguides.com?
The best place to go for up to date impartial info on every single country
in the world, and over 150 cities across five continents. Plus also airport
guides. Secondly, www.themobilefoodguide.com is great for restaurants in
London! "Travelling Frog", London
Having just returned from a trip to the Caribbean (Barbados) we read with
great interest the "Best Travel Websites" to compare notes with
our own reviews of various travel sites. We were surprised to find no
mention of www.definitivecaribbean.com,
a site we found to be quite user friendly with unbiased, concise, thorough,
and above all, accurate information about the island. They clearly know
their stuff! Kathleen Wallace, London
What! No mention of www.sleepinginairports.net?
And why have www.thetrainline.co.uk, which charges for buying tickets been
mentioned when www.nationalrail.co.uk
provides more information and has links to the rail companies all of whom
don't have fees for buying tickets? Alan Rowell, Edinburgh
One of the best new sites I’ve found, especially with World Cup coming up, is www.germany.co.uk,
which has loads of independent information on the country and also a full
search engine/online booking facility for hotels, cars and flights. The site
really came into its own when we were planning our trip as it meant we could
find all we wanted on one site rather than having to trawl through a number
before we felt as though we had sufficient information to make our travel
arrangements. Rachael Hunter, Leeds
Flightmapping (http://flightmapping.com)
provides comprehensive information about which airlines go where, worldwide,
from which airports within the UK. Also, I am amazed that there is no
mention of Virtual Tourist (www.virtualtourist.com),
which has a very active forum. Peter Duncan, Northampton
I was looking for a person to travel with, after my divorce to my ex-husband.
Many of my friends are older, paired off and not available. I saw www.soulescape.com
which helped me match someone with a partner, and was able to enjoy a great
trip with them in Antigua. I think this is a brilliant service, and hope
everyone uses it! Santa Jameson, London
Responding to the question "is there a website you always go back to
because it's reliable and easy to use", I would nominate easyJet.
It was the first travel website I ever used as a computer novice and was
thrilled when I made my first booking. My husband, who is highly critical of
most website design, layout and text, (especially clarity of written
English) also finds this site easy to navigate. Dyann Rowe,
Enfield, Middlesex
I am about the embark on a round-the-world trip so have been surfing a number
of sites. By far the best site I have come across is www.travellersconnected.com.
It provides a real travellers voice - a number of other websites seem to
lose this somehow. Over the last few months I have read about, via the site,
a number of people meeting up to travel together and a good discussion is
taking place at the moment about travelling the world in general. Above all
it is not overly dominated by 18 year olds calling everyone dude! Quite a
refreshing change really. Kate Murray, Saltburn by the Sea,
Cleveland
If you're planning a walk in the Cheviot Hills in the heart of the
Northumberland National Park it's worth visiting www.cheviotwalks.co.uk
as it contains an excellent selection of walks and related articles and
photographs. It's not for beginners but well worth checking out. Geoff
Holland, Monkseaton, Tyne and Wear
www.gettingaboutbritain.com
started life as a British Tourist Authority magazine for independent
visitors from overseas. It ran for 15 years until 2002 and I was its
founding editor. In March 2005 it translated itself into an independent web
site covering UK travel by train, coach, ferry and (in the next couple of
weeks) 'plane by showing and comparing the transport links that are
available for independent travel and describes what can be expected at
journey's end. Related forms of mobility like walking, cycling and canal
boating are also touched on. Might I humbly suggest consideration -
Clive Lewis (editor of gettingaboutbritain), Thames Ditton, Surrey
When it comes to exchanging travel info, finding deals and learning from
other experienced travellers, I would suggest www.flyertalk.com.
People also share information on hotels and places - Michael
Brandt, Yokohama, Japan
For anyone concerned about their family's health and safety on holiday, www.checksafetyfirst.com
is a must. The site contains information on hundreds of hotels around the
world that have gone the extra mile to increase their standards of hygiene,
health and safety and protect guests against illness and injury during their
holiday. It's a great way of getting independent information -
Dan Bowsher, Newbury, Berks
Most of my travel is done in the UK by car and I suspect that is the the same
for most people. So it was a pleasure to discover www.trafficeye.co.uk
- a realtime traffic information site where I can check for any incidents on
the route I am going before I set off. It is quick, graphic based and easy
to use, and importantly not deep inside a larger site. I check it before
every journey and it has already saved me a couple of hours stuck in long
term roadworks or delays that aren't covered by my local radio. Once on the
move I do revert to the radio as the best form of up to date travel info -
Chris Cook, Beverley, East Yorkshire
www.inyourpocket.com -
which specialises in Central and Eastern Europe - is, I think, the only
travel guide publisher to place its entire content online, for free. With so
many of inyourpocket.com's cities now on the radar of the budget airlines,
the value of this site is priceless - Craig Turp, Bucharest
Getting there is only part of the equation, making sure you don't piss off
the locals is where the excitement begins. That's what Escapeblog.com
will teach you. How to keep your nose clean, avoid cultural faux pas and
while abroad. An entertaining read - Pinar Ataksli, Istanbul
For anyone interested in travelling in Italy by rail I have some great train
and accommodation website tips. They should research their itinerary using www.trenitalia.it.
Use the buttons to note down the train times, types, train number, number of
stops etc. and then go to an independent ticket company such as Festtravel.
Festtravel will cost the journey, make seat reservations, check on Eurostar
Italia supplements etc. Then all you have to do in Italy is validate your
tickets at the machines on the platform entrances and take your seats.
Italian trains can be very crowded at weekends and reservations are well
worth while. If you like trains in general, I suggest a look at the www.railtouritalia.com.
For hotels try www.venere.com,
which has very good location mapping and user reviews. They also only take
your credit card number to hold the reservation (so you can cancel) and you
pay the hotel. For travel advice, the American website www.tripadvisor.com
is great. Robert Brown, Southampton
www.travelwatchdog.com
has been my first port of call for anything holiday related for a number of
years now. I would recommend this site to all travellers. Lousie
Hall, Birmingham
For cheap flights in Europe, www.moneysavingexpert.com
has a very good Flightchecker service. Put in where you're leaving from and
it pulls up all budget airline flights from there (easyJet not included).
The site currently searches Ryanair, BmiBaby, Norwegian Air, SkyEurope,
Thomsonfly and Flybe, but it plans to add more and you can search a range of
dates plus set limits on how much you want to pay. Caroline
Wright, Manchester
Is your choice international? I suggest you should also consider a website
that the little-known country of Albania, www.albania-hotel.com.
I didn't know anything about Albania before, and I found very good
information here. Olga Faraci, Rome, Italy
I got frustrated with not being able to find the travel information I wanted,
so set up my own website with travel information for those flying from
London. You can visit at harryclarke.googlepages.com
Harry Clarke, London
I would like you to look at www.travelwatchdog.com
which I believe is the only site that is dedicated to helping travellers
without trying to sell them anything Robert Braban, Sleaford,
