It was a fresh, sunny morning on the harbourfront in the Cornish fishing town of Mousehole. The tide was out. Dozens of brightly coloured boats lay tethered on the exposed sands below the sea wall, as gulls wheeled lazily overhead, cawing.
Overlooking this scene stood a low, sturdy stone pub - The Ship - and outside it a small group clad in boots and rucksacks was congregating for the start of the next in our series of Times Walks for readers.
Led by Alex Wade, author of the Coaster column in the Weekend section of The Times, and David Wenk of English Country Walks, this week's ramble took us west across fields dotted with standing stones, to the picturesque wooded maritime valley of Lamorna.
Here beneath a lush, jungle-like canopy of trees and ferns, we discovered the remains of massive quarries that once powered the local economy; granite from Lamorna was used in the construction of many London landmarks, including the Thames Embankment.
Dropping to the quayside café at Lamorna Cove, we stopped off to admire the seemingly tropical scenery and azure waters of the Atlantic, while slurping on cones of scrumptious homemade Cornish ice cream.
A special thanks to readers John Nunn of Hayle, Jo & Louise Rayner of Essex, Trevor & Rose Turney of the Midlands, Andy Cooper and his partner Kate and Dave & Vicky from Worcester, all of whom survived the rugged scramble back to Mousehole along the spectacular, precipitous coast path. Afterwards, we celebrated with lunch and a round of bitters under the parasols atop The Ship's open-air patio.
