The 10 dirtiest hotels in Britain have been named and shamed by users of the world's biggest review site, Tripadvisor.

In its third annual survey of the worst hotels, the survey singled out the Cromwell Crown in Kensington, London as bottom of the pile in Britain.

Based on traveller's ratings for cleanliness, Tripadvisor said more outspoken comments included: “Hell on earth is a compliment”, whilst others refer to “rat droppings on the bed”, a bedroom which “stank of vomit and smoke” and “coffee that tasted of salami.”

A scan of the site today showed opinions haven't changed: "It doesn't even deserve the title hotel, it is a BAD hostel! 10 rooms at each floor, with ONE shower and ONE toilets to share for us all," says one comment.

Another adds: "There was a plastic pipe that went through the middle of the room at ankle height and newspaper stuffed into the wall at one end where the pipe went into the wall. I found a bed bug in my bed and the quilt had stains on it."

The 20-roomed hotel, which charges under £50, rates only 1.5 among user ratings - and absolutely no points when users are asked to rate it for families with young children or teenagers. Its joint highest rankings is for people who have pets.

However, the hotel is not quite as damned on other websites. Cammell11, writing on Virtualtourist, says: "You can get a single room with bathroom for £30. The place is not very clean, very 'hostel' like, but you get what you pay for."

The review of Britain's worst 10 hotels include seven in London, and one each in Oxford, Manchester and Brighton.

Despite being named and shamed in last year’s dirtiest list, three repeat offenders failed to clean up their act, said a spokesman for Tripadvisor.

Nanford Guest House in Oxford, which claimed the top spot last year and second place in 2007, ranks at number three – whilst London’s Eden Plaza Hotel moves up from ninth to fifth place and the Park Hotel, also in London, moves down from sixth to tenth place.
