The chillout one
HOTEL HACIENDA NA XAMENA
Right up on the northwest coast, in a part of the island inhabited mainly by
locals and savvy expats, the Hacienda Na Xamena has a splendid air of
isolation. It’s the perfect base for exploring the glorious other Ibiza,
away from the clubs and resorts.
The low-lying white building has a stunning cliffside location, with a sheer
drop several hundred feet down to the sea. Decorated in a somewhat
schizophrenic Moroccan/Asian theme, the hotel’s 65 rooms seem slightly
dated, but to compensate, they have gobsmacking sea views and many come with
outdoor Jacuzzis.
The small but perfectly formed La Posidonia spa offers hydrotherapy treatments
with a high-tech slant: the hotel is worth visiting for the extraordinary
open-air terraced wave-cascade hydrotherapy pool alone.

The DJ’s one
HOTEL ES VIVE
In quiet Figueretas, about a mile from Ibiza town, the Es Vive belies its
location with a series of hedonistic pool parties in high season and an
umbilical link to the island’s club scene. Packed with sexy bikini-clad
dance divas recovering on teak sun loungers, this is categorically not a
family-oriented hotel.
With 55 bright Ikea-chic rooms, the Es Vive provides perfect style on a
budget. The two corner suites are well worth the upgrade, with huge showers
and ocean-view double balconies.
The hotel comes into its own from about 3am, when the glam (fully
soundproofed) DJ bar gets going as clubbers and DJs return from the venues
and hold impromptu after-parties. If you plan to sleep, get a room away from
both the bar and the lift.
Doubles from £69, suites from £124; 00 34 971 301902,

The jet-set one
EL HOTEL PACHA
If their yachts are out of commission, this is where the visiting glitterati
hole up. From the owners of the Spanish mega club Pacha, El Hotel is the
only international-standard hotel on the island. With obvious Schrager
influences — double-height atrium, gallons of white paint and sculptural
seating — this place radiates serenity, in contrast to its location in the
industrial area of Ibiza town’s marina. The 55 all-white junior suites come
with enough orchids to rival Kew, flatscreen TVs and pressure showers (a
rarity on parched Ibiza). Only use the swimming pool if you have a model
body or enormous amounts of chutzpah.
El Hotel has no atmosphere whatsoever, which makes it a perfect antidote to an
up-all-night session mingling with the celebs at Pacha, opposite.

The chic one
LOS JARDINES DE PALERM
Perched on a hillside above sleepy San José, this is a charming boutique hotel
set in a 17th-century finca. A labour of love on the owners’ part, Los
Jardines is more akin to staying in a family home that just happens to be a
laid-back but efficient hotel. There are just five double rooms, and four
fabulous modernist suites in shades of taupe, with stunning polished
concrete bathrooms.
Los Jardines has no central communal area, just beautiful terraced grounds
where you can drift between the shaded bar, the infinity lap pool by the
lemon trees, and a second pool in the centre of the hotel. A perfect
breakfast of fruit, yoghurt and breads is served in an olive grove. There’s
no restaurant or room service, but there’s a splendid tapas bar five
minutes’ walk down the hill.

The budget one
HOSTAL LA MARINA
In high season, it’s almost impossible to find affordable short-stay beds in
Ibiza — so keep La Marina under your hat. This friendly, cheap hotel is bang
in the middle of Ibiza town, so ear plugs and a laid-back attitude are
essential. The clean, primary-coloured rooms, with wrought-iron bedsteads
and tiny bathrooms, are perfect for a weekend — any longer and the lack of a
pool or beach, and the location, will begin to grate.
The accommodation is arranged around Calle Barcelona in four blocks, all with
24-hour access. The best rooms, because they are the quietest — relatively
speaking — overlook the harbour in the main La Marina building, which dates
from 1862. The ensuite rooms in Los Caracoles are smaller and noisier, but
great value.

of the big clubs, only Pacha is open all year round.
