Check-in was busy, but I was greeted courteously at reception, and was soon in my room. No 1316 was a decent enough size, standard-issue furnishings, with majestic view over the staff car park and bins. Plus points included an ironing board, internet connection and a bathroom goodie bag that some airlines’ business-class cabins could learn from. The only drawback was a well-hidden plug-in air freshener that did its sweet-smelling job sickeningly well throughout the night.
The hotel has its own bar: the Shed, which was deserted. Apparently, Chelsea players never drop in for a drink. “They’re all fitness freaks,” said a barman. The team often stays at the hotel, however, on the night before matches.
The hotel’s Kings Brasserie was also dead, perhaps because there are so many top-class, stylish restaurants near by? But my pan-fried chicken breast with buttered spinach, bubble and squeak and red wine jus turned out to be good, and I couldn’t fault the service from the friendly Italian waitress. The major downer, apart from the cost, was the plastic decor and harsh lighting, seemingly separated at birth from McDonald’s at Gatwick.
Breakfast the next morning – poached eggs, tomato and bacon cooked to order – was quick, tasty and, again, with friendly service. Overall the hotel doesn’t do a bad job. It’s all a bit could-be-anywhere and anonymous but when it comes to location and price, it shoots, it scores.
Bottom line: Will Hide booked via the hotel’s website and paid £89 for a double room.
Sampling the fare: For two people: main course, Irish coffee, wine and service, £72. English breakfast, £14.
Access all areas: Three rooms fully adapted for disabled guests. A further five have some disabled facilities.
