A large white Victorian terraced hotel, so discreet that it is hard to find the small brass name plaque.

First impressions

Old money meets modern good taste. Wood panelling, unusual chandeliers, oil paintings and a lovely snug with log fire and honesty champagne bucket.

Why it’s special

The interior design, by Kit and Tim Kemp, who bravely mix old and new to stunning effect.

Sampling the fare

Kemps Restaurant is small and welcoming, with inexpensive food by London standards: cured Italian charcuterie with olives, tomatoes and parmesan £5.50, pan-fried salmon with lemon mayonnaise and asparagus £13.50.

Hitting the sack

Its 51 rooms and suites are stuffed with antiques. The Kings suite has an English oak refectory table, antique carver chairs in bright blue gingham and a collection of silver. Bathrooms are marbled throughout.

Stairs to the entrance; no rooms specially designed for wheelchair-bound guests.

Added attractions

Culture and shopping. It’s close to the V&A and Natural History museums, Harrods, Harvey Nichols and Hyde Park. There is a jazz band every Wednesday and a jazz brunch on Sunday.

Sex appeal

Good for couples looking for a setting straight out of House and Garden.

Star quality

Uma Thurman, Jamie Lee Curtis . . . oh, and Hugh Grant is a regular diner.

What we think

Drop-dead gorgeous and great for a shopping weekend with romance thrown in.
