First impressions

A low, white, 18th-century L-shaped inn set down a nine-mile part-single-track road on the edge of the Sound of Sleat at the mainland point closest to Isle of Skye.

Why it’s special

Glenelg is run by the swashbuckling Chris Main, often in kilt and billowing white shirt. He doesn’t do reception, room keys, TVs, phones or trouser presses, but gives the warmest welcome.

Hitting the sack

Five large bedrooms in the back wing, one that easily accommodates three single beds (good for families); plus one huge suite (Room 6) with a balcony overlooking the sea.

Sampling the fare

Monster cooked breakfasts; packed lunches to order; evening set menu £29.

Added attractions

Glenelg-Kylerhea short ferry to Skye (in summer), boat trips to lochs and islands, including Ring of Bright Water area.

Access all areas

One twin-bedded room on ground floor, but bathroom not fully equipped for wheelchairs.

What we think

A genuine place with no airs and graces; never a dull moment in the company of Chris.

Bottom line

Dinner, B&B from £89pp Easter to late October; down to £79 in any room if you stay two nights or more in winter.
