First impressions
Opened last month, this 19th-century country house retains its elegant
exterior while boasting a designer-styled interior that makes it Edinburgh’s
funkiest new hostel: cool lino and wooden decor, vibrant colours and a
generally minimalist feel. It’s perched on the serene south side of the
Firth of Forth, a 15-minute bus ride from Princes Street.
Why it’s special
Inspired by Australian backpacking accommodation, its attention to detail in
terms of home comforts (for example, beanbags in a PlayStation room)
combined with the luxury of the sauna and spa (£2 a visit) set it apart from
usual drab British hostels.
Hitting the sack
There are 368 beds, including double and twin rooms with en suite bathrooms,
or bunk rooms for six to eight people. The pine bunks are sturdy, with
reading lights and privacy curtains. There are 35 rooms that overlook the
Firth of Forth.
Sampling the fare
Ping Cuisine available in a microwave area; tagliatelle £1.89.
Added attractions
Lauriston Castle and the Cramond Roman fort are both within walking distance.
Reception rents out bikes and in-line skates for £5 a day.
Access all areas
A lift and wide doorways make it generally good for wheelchair access. There
are disabled toilets, and the double rooms are recommended for wheelchair
users.
Bottom line
£14 for a bunk; £19pp for a double or twin room.
What we think
Great fun — from the movie den to the PlayStation room. Perfect for someone
exploring Edinburgh on a budget.
