Setting the scene: a Tudor farmhouse built on the site of a medieval monastery overlooking the sea and Portsmouth.
First impressions: as if you’re spending a weekend in the country with Bertie Wooster. Vintage suitcases and golf clubs adorn the ground-floor rooms.
Why it’s special: a magnificent 14th-century porch, imported stone by stone from France; a Tudor fireplace; panelled Jacobean lounge, elegant drawing room and a dining room decorated by murals. There’s also a resident ghost, the Blue Lady.
Hitting the sack: every bedroom has a different style. The spacious Chinese room has bamboo blinds, wooden chests and an impressive Victorian-style bath in the corner, with only a screen for modesty.
Sampling the fare: The Priory restaurant utilises local ingredients. Starters include terrine of local rabbit, followed by grilled turbot, garlic-roasted scallops and prawn and rocket risotto.
Added attractions: access to a private beach where food is served in summer. Children are also made welcome with family suites and a children’s high tea between 5-6pm.
Access all areas: wheelchair access is difficult upstairs but all ground floor rooms are accessible; friendly staff say: “We will find a way of looking after you."
The bottom line: low season B&B doubles from £110, rising to £170 in summer. Half board an extra £20pp.
What we think: close to the Wightlink car ferry terminus at Fishbourne. “All Wight”, and more besides.

DO NOT STAY in the self catering accomodation very over priced and needs a complete make over. Kitchen was falling apart, bathroom had no shower but lots of mould, beds were very poor and could feel springs in mattress. We cut our family break short as a result. Such a shame .
