Setting the scene: converted from an old bank, this hotel opened just before Christmas and is right in the city centre. It’s the first hotel venture from the restaurant group Loch Fyne, and is situated above one of its popular seafood restaurants.
First impressions: modern but not too trendy. Cream walls, wrought-iron light fittings, sisal matting underfoot.
Why it’s special: a home-from-home atmosphere (just six standard rooms, and three suites). Two of the suites have claw-footed Victorian baths (book well in advance).
Hitting the sack: rooms have egg-and-dart coving, high ceilings and sash windows swathed in floor-to-ceiling brown suede curtains. Imposing mantelpieces and shiny wooden floors give them a contemporary feel.
Sampling the fare: Loch Fyne specialises in fish — such as delicious tuna with chilli noodles, fresh oysters and grilled lobster with garlic butter. Freshly smoked kippers with hearty chunks of crusty bread were a breakfast treat.
Access all areas: wheelchair access to the restaurant, but not to the rooms.
Added attractions: Bath Abbey and the new Roman Baths.
What we think: fantastic value for a hotel that’s so central.
Bottom line: B&B doubles from £75.
