Setting the scene: beautiful Virginia-creeper-clad Georgian house just off the Old Quay.

First impressions: style and symmetry: a grand sweeping staircase, marble pillars and chequered floor.

Hitting the sack: some of the 32 rooms are recently refurbished and with nice touches: hardbacks, plants, a pincushion. We were in Fontainebleau, which was gorgeous.

Sampling the fare: award-winning, with an emphasis on fish, seafood and game. A two-course dinner (£18.95) in the main restaurant offers pigeon in red wine sauce, or roast partridge; banana and butterscotch crumble.

Added attractions: walk through the historic quarter and admire the Georgian houses and the church. Or drive to the New Forest or Stonehenge. It also has a marriage licence . . .

Star quality: Tories attending a party conference in nearby Bournemouth; Southampton FC manager Harry Redknapp; and the TV newsreader Sir Trevor McDonald: all thought it was their little secret, until now.
