Attend a special evening hosted by Mike Atherton
First impressions
A refuge from the storm that ravaged Boscastle farther up the coast. After
ascending the steep hill that comprises half the tiny village of Mawgan
Porth, turn left and you’ll find a golden beach and roaring waves as
Atlantic rollers come crashing in, all neatly framed by your sea view
window.
Why it’s special
During the summer it’s a kids’ hotel where adults are welcome. There’s a
heated swimming pool, table tennis, table football and best of all for
parents, a child-minder on duty in the video-room at dinner time. When the
families are gone cosy couples move in for painting, pampering and cookery
breaks.
Hitting the sack
More homely comfort than designer luxury — makes sense with all that sand
around.
Sampling the fare
Recently awarded an AA rosette, and building on that. Expect to find local
produce such as Gressingham duck breast or Mounts Bay haddock with crispy
leeks. Three courses £24.95.
Added attractions
Be brave and slip on a wet suit then tackle the ferocious surf on a bodyboard.
No? Then perhaps a gentle stroll along the meandering coastal path high
above the beach. Rick Stein’s Seafood Restaurant is a short drive away in
Padstow.
What we think
Easy-going and informal, and the terrace is a fantastic spot to enjoy a
Skinner’s Cornish beer while watching the sun sink over the horizon.
Reasonably priced and a far less frantic location than Newquay, just down
the road.
Bottom line
B&B doubles plus dinner from £110. Free transfers from Newquay airport.
