First impressions
An elegant, if rather plain, Edwardian building in a pretty village with a
stream running beside the main street.
Why it’s special
It’s a small and intimate guesthouse which is run by Ian Pearson and Lynne
Abbott, who are good fun and who — just like their guests — enjoy walking in
the wonderful scenery of the Quantock Hills, Britain’s first Area of
Outstanding Natural Beauty, right on their doorstep. Group walks are
organised, some with a “real ale” theme.
Hitting the sack
Five individual en suite rooms: the best, the Castle Room, has a four-poster
bed. Dogs welcome, but let Ian and Lynne know in advance.
Sampling the fare
After a day in the fresh air up on the hills you want hearty, unpretentious
fare — and you will find it here. Red deer are locally common, so venison is
often on the menu. Another excellent dish was a cassoulet of local pork,
sausages, duck and white beans. All vegetables are straight from the garden
in season, or from a local organic farmer.
Added attractions
Samuel Coleridge lived in the village and wrote his poems here. The National
Trust owns Coleridge’s Cottage, which is a two-minute walk away. There’s
also a log fire and a secluded back garden.
Access all areas
One of the rooms is accessible by wheelchair, with extra-large bathroom and
shower.
What we think
A great base for walks, with warm and genuine hospitality: plenty of real ale,
quality wine and, of course, cider. The “real ale” walks are the most
popular — Nether Stowey has three inns to stop off at. Also a good choice
for people with dogs, who are provided with a welcome pack of a bowl, basket
and a canine treat.
The bottom line
Rooms £50-£75; the room with the four-poster is £75. Evening meals are from
£12.50 for two courses. A four-course “gourmet menu” meal includes a glass
of wine with each course and costs £30.
