My young son is fast becoming a Ferrari buff, and as we are holidaying in northern Italy this spring, I wondered if it is possible to tour the factory? Ian Peters, Luton
Sunday Times travel expert, Richard Green, responds: It is, and it’s free, if you happen to own a Ferrari, that is. If you own one already, I guess you are used to a car that turns heads and opens doors, so this will come as no surprise. Simply contact your Ferrari dealer, who will be delighted to help set up a visit.
For the rest of us, it’s a small matter of saving up the £350,000 needed to buy a new F60 model, or as it applies to owning a Ferrari of any vintage, a more modest £15,000 for a second-hand 308 Dino would get you in too. And by the way, don’t think you can just rent one for the day and turn up - it all has to be checked and cross-checked through ownership documents and chassis numbers.
Don’t let this put you off visiting the Ferrari-fixated little town of Maranello though, just a few miles from Bologna. The cars have been manufactured here for the past 60 years, and it is home to the Galleria Ferrari museum (www.galleriaferrari.com, entry £8), which houses the world’s biggest collection of Ferrari’s. Plus there’s a recreation of the Enzo Ferrari’s study, displays of the Formula 1 kit, and a gift shop. The restaurant opposite the factory gates is where many of the employees have lunch, as often did Enzo Ferrari, before he died in 1988.
It’s worth calling in at a couple of enthusiast’s shops in the town, the Warm Up (www.warmup.it) and Hors Ligne are the best.
