I’m going to the USA on a touring and golf holiday in June. I will have one suitcase and two sets of golf clubs and would like to hire Mustang. If I put the case on the back seat, will the trunk/boot be big enough for the clubs? B Mac, Glasgow

Sunday Times travel expert, Richard Green, responds: Gone are the days when American cars guzzled gas and lugged around boots big enough to swallow Mini’s whole. Well, not quite; but as the Mustang is a smallish and sporty vehicle, the boot isn’t as yawning as you might think – especially as the convertible loses some trunk space to make room for the folding-roof mechanism.

However, your guess is about right, and the new Mustang GT convertible has a trunk capacity of 275 litres, compared to a Ford Fiesta with 255 litres or VW Golf at 340 litres. This will be enough for the clubs, and with a soft-style of bag, perhaps for that as well.

You can book Mustang’s through some of the big international names in car hire, like Avis (0844 5818181) for example, but you’ll usually find that they can’t guarantee a particular make of car in a category.
