Sunday Times travel expert, Richard Green, responds: Neuschwantstein castle is perhaps the most famous castle in the world. It was started in 1869 and based on the sketches of a theatre designer rather than an architect, making it a shoe-in for the fairy-tale schloss used in the film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. It was the mountain retreat of King Ludwig II, and nearby are several other of his whimsical creations, now promoted as part of the Romantic Road that runs from Wurzberg to Fussen.
