Times Online travel insurance expert Elizabeth Colman responds: Travel insurance cover is widely available for one-day and one-night trips.

Most policies are available for less than £10. Many annual multi-trip policies also cover you for short trips - one day or 24 hours - although it is worth checking the small print as some smaller provider have a two night mininum.

Onedaytravel (tel. 0870 890 3798), which launched this week specifically to target football fans who are off to Europe for Champions League games offers cover for day trips with no overnight stay or a 24 hour stay in Europe. Onedaytravel's policy costs for £5, or £6.25 if you want to add watersports or ski coverage. But their policy does not pay out if there is a terrorist attack. If such an attack leads to you incurring medical expenses or losing your property, you will have to pay your own expenses.

BIBA, (tel. 0901 814 0015) the association that advises British travel insurance brokers, recommends Arch's short trip cover at £9.74, which covers you for up to three days, with no mimimum stay. Arch's policy (Arch is a broker-only insurer so you need to contact BIBA to find a broker) covers you in the event of a terrorist attack, and covers loss or theft of personal baggage to a limit of £2000.

Swinton (tel. 0800 056 5631) insurance sells a policy that covers you from one to five days for £9.79. It will pay medical hospital fees up to £10 million and personal accident up to £25,000, and lost and stolen baggage up to £1,500.

When travelling abroad for stag nights and football matches, it is important to note that most insurers will not pay out if you are found to have been drunk. Prices can vary for older travellers. Note that when on holiday within the UK the situation is quite different. Most insurers require you to stay a minimum of one or in some cases two nights in pre-booked travel.
