On a Thomson flight to Luxor recently, the aircraft cabin was so cold that, along with other passengers, we asked for blankets. We were told they could be purchased for £4. Is this just one more sneaky way of adding to the cost of flying? Maureen Taylor, Gravesend, Kent
Thomson replies: “If customers find the cabin too hot or too cold, they can alert a member of staff who can use their discretion as to whether a change in temperature will be in the interest of all passengers. Thomsonfly made the decision to remove free blankets as one of the environmental initiatives to reduce the weight of the aircraft and, therefore, reduce the amount of carbon dioxide produced.”

Ah, the tired old eco-excuse. Air for the air-conditioning is very hot when it is extracted from the engines, and it uses energy to cool it before it enters the cabin. Besides which, if the cabin temperature were raised when complaints were made, instead of leaping on a opportunity to profit, then there would be no need to carry those blankets.
How sad to see another once proud airline model itself on Ryanair. The new TFly pay per bag charging scheme is more complicated and even more rigorously enforced than Ryanair, leading to endless queues as customers try to transfer belongings from suitcases to handbagage and vice vesa, so as to reduce the excess charges.
At least the staff remain friendly and positive. How long will it be before management stamp this out for fear of the customers actually having a pleasant flight!
