I'm visiting Petra next month and want to do the candlelit tour in the evening, but I can't find any information. Does it happen every day, where do I get a ticket, and how much does it cost? Crispin McDonald, Truro

Sunday Times travel expert, Richard Green, responds: It's called 'Petra by Night', and currently takes place on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings, from about 8:30, and costs £8pp. You can buy tickets from any of the bigger hotels in Wadi Musa (the tourist town near to the site), or the Petra main ticket office. Start times change depending on the season, and it is dependent on enough people booking, so you should book at the first opportunity after you arrive.

It a kinder, gentler take on the son et lumiere style of show, where the sound is provided by a lone flautist (occasionally with a couple of guys with guitars too), and the light comes from about 1,800 'lanterns' - actually just brown paper bags half full of sand with a tea candles in each, placed there by hand before each tour.

There's a real effort to keep the experience simple, and the guide will ask you to switch off mobile phones, and to try not to talk as you stroll down the mile-long stroll down the mile long, and narrow fissure called the Siq.

It does make for a fantastically atmospheric experience.

The natural alleyway eventually reveals the well-known façade of the Treasury, which famously starred along side Indiana Jones in the Last Crusade. Again, the only light is from hundreds of candles placed all around. Visitors sit on the cool sand, and after a brief talk by a warden of the park, local Bedouin play their instruments inside the coal-black entrance in the façade. Magical.
